well, I tried to checker the front strap on one of my 1911s....didn't turn out too well. In fact, I hadn't even finished the first cut when I realized that there was no frikkin' way it would look good. I stippled it instead....I've since stippled several pistols for friends (beer money). If a ham-handed, wrench-bender like myself can produce professional-looking results on steel frames, I'd say pretty much anyone (who has the patience) could do the same on polymer. There was a thread here about a week ago--gentleman stippled his glock with a wood burning pen, and it looked a lot like the 2nd pic you posted. eta: speak of the devil! |
Awesome Work! Does anyone have any ideas how to get the effect like on the XD in my first picture? |

The checkering is a metal checkered panel probably glued in place. Here is the description from the website you got the pic from. "Supply and fit metal 20 lpi. checkered front strap in place of existing checkering and stipple front (silver, black, gray or OD green) 75.00 " This verbage is on the same pic in the gallery section of that site too: "An OD Green SA-XD with its grip stippled 360, 3/4 trigger guard stipple and a steel checkered front strap fitted in the grip" I have seen some of these checkered panels sold to be soldered in place on firearms where the frontstrap is too thin to be checkered on directly. |
Thank you. I was refering to the more grainy texture on the sides of the grip on the XD as opposed to the dotted stipling on the Glocks. |
