I have one of the 5" tactical models in .40 S&W.....but a standard 4" sevice model in 9mm would be perfect for a newbie. My buddy has one and I like it almost as much as my XD-40.  The 9mm kicks a little less.

They are awesome guns.....great price, very reliable, very accurate.  Can't go wrong with one of them.

I think you can pick up a new 4" service model for around $425.

I think they're pretty good guns for the price.  The ergonomics are nice, although there is a bit  more muzzle flip than a Glock, at least IMHO.

But, I think they were better value back when they were known as the HS2000.  Must cost a lot to have "Springfield Armory" and "XD" engraved on them.

I simply love my XDs and have not had a bit of trouble out of any of the four.
