| I live in an area where during the winter months a typical hollow point round would, in most cases, have to defeat a heavy winter coat followed by a heavy layer of clothing. My question is what are the chances of a hollow point expanding after this? I would think by the time it actually began to penetrate tissue the cavity would be full of clothing and not properly expand. The only option I've seen is the Federal Expanding Point FMJ (it's actually kind of a cool concept). I've noticed that compared to a hollow point it doesn't expand quite as much but some expansion is better than none right? What do you guys think of this round? |

When it comes to ammo I try to make my choices in the same way I select tires for my automobile.....I go with all-seasons! The Federal EFMJ is obviously better than ball, but it has proven to perform somewhat inconsistently in tests. If you will go over to the ammo section in the ar15 section of the board, you will see a thread which is about 6 pages long relating to the best rounds for the .45 ACP. Somewhere toward the 4th or 5th page, Tatjana shows test results of this round and shows it isn't as good as some of the better JHP loads. Now getting back to my "all seasons" statement, I try to choose ammo that works well in all seasons. I expect the same ammo to perform on naked attackers, attackers wearing t-shirts, sweatshirts, jackets or heavier Winter clothing. The two rounds that best demonstrate this ability is the Speer Gold Dot and Winchester Ranger. In 9mm the 124 gr +P Speer load and the 127 gr +P+ and 147 gr Rangers seem to be the best weights. In .40 S&W, I like the same two loads in 180 gr. And with 45 ACP, again, the same brands in 230 gr. If you have a different caliber, let me know and I will try to get you some figures. I also have expansion/penetration tests regarding this ammo when fired through 4 layers of denim. I think it's pretty convincing if you need that info. Just let me know what caliber's we are talking about. Hope this helped. -Charging Handle |
