I have a ruger p85 in 9mm, but i'd like something else. only reason i got the gun was the price.. cmon, new at $175, i cant pass that up.. anyways, i cant decide between a glock for its toughness or a 1911 because its a 1911. tell me what y'all like about each and PLZ leave suggestions. *price is a concern so nothin crazy |
| oops, sry... umm right now being only 17 (18 in october! w00t for m14 purchase!) it'd mainly be used for range shooting and to work on biulding my skills since i want to be in the special forces and DEA or FBI type work after that. Chance that dad would be using it for CHL from time to time. |
| Go to a range that'll let you rent several different pistols. Rent as many as you can, shoot 'em all, buy whatever works for you. Different people have different philosophies in handguns, different sized hands, different length fingers, different shaped bodies (for those who carry concealed) and so on. Try before you buy. |

Not that they are the greatest, but everyone ought to own at least one 1911. There are a bunch of folks who love them, and after all..."Fifty million Elvis fans can't be wrong." I finally gave in a bought a Springfield MilSpec, not the GI, but the MilSpec, last year. I love it. Do I feel the need to pimp it out and spend many $'s on it? No. But I like it for what it is - a timeless design. It works. The Glocks will work. I had a Glock 27 and it was a fine pistol BUT, I could not get comfortable with trying to carry it due to the trigger. Nothing wrong with it, but it just did not work for me. I have a Springfield XD9 fullsize that I carry and I feel better with the grip safety. I know I practice good trigger discipline but I could just imagine that Glock trigger getting caught on something and that was enough for me to get rid of it. Paid $520 for it, kept it a year, and sold it for $450. BTW, Whatever you get between the Glock and 1911, you'll probably wind up getting the other one in a year or two anyway, so don't sweat it too bad. You can never have too many. |
+1 SA 1911 (mil-spec or loaded), SIG P-226/P-229 or a G19/21/20 would be my first choices...all used of course |
Last time I checked you can't buy a handgun until you're 21. |

Beat me to it. The voice of reason in a mob. The #1 idea is to try before you buy so that you know if it fits your hand and works well for you. Case in point. I like Glocks but the grip frame is impossible for me to hold correctly after shooting a 1911 since 1968. The resultant mismatch has me getting FTF's & FTE's due to the way that I hold pistols. As a result, I prefer Sigs, XD's, and1911's. Not that there is anything wrong with a Glock but that it ain't right for me. HTH, wganz ¶ |

nothing wrong w/ that--guns are for everyone! h/w, +1 on trying out a firearm if you can before purchasing--some guns fit some and not others FWIW: i'm a glock/1911 man myself; h/w, HKs and SIGs work for me too |

I hit much better with my 1911, but it is a very custom piece. If you can swing about $475-$550, then I recommend getting a Glock of some sort. I had a Glock 23, but since my wife didn't care for the recoil, she likes the Glock 19 in 9mm much better! PS I say all of this, assuming that you will do this once you are of age and can legally purchase a pistol. |
unless you like SS or want to mod a SS, i'd get the old Park... |
