Does anyone have a Walther P-22? I just recently checked one out and thought it was really cool. Anyone have any experience with one?

I was wanting to get one and put a really quiet suppressor on it (Legal)!... Any ideas?

I came close to getting one at a local show.
I think they have a certain cool factor too.
The one I looked at had the rear sight canted in the slide, so I passed.
Shortly afterwards, I read in HERE about magazine problems, at least on the early ones, causing jams way too often. (Once is too often for me)
There are several owners of the P-22 that hang out here, so I'm sure you should get some more feedback.

i wanted one until i held it. even with the big grip installed it was just not a good grip for me. they should have made a man sized grip on it.

I love mine.  It has the older magazines but it has broken in nicely and I have very few problems now.  Just make sure to use good ammo.  It doesn't like any of the underpowered stuff.

P-22 with Gemtech Outback suppressor is a pretty sweet set up.  A few reliability problems shooting sub-sonic, but can still drop a Rabbit with the Outback and sub-sonic ammo.

hey new guy here. i will be picking my new p22 up this afternoon. i bought the 5" but will get the shorter barrel too. hopefully i'll get to shoot it this weekend. speaking of silencers how does one go about legally purchasing one?

You have to fill out the Class III form crap. It costs $200, (it's a "tax), and make sure that before you buy a silencer, that the LEO or whoever has to sign your Class III form, will actually sign it!

I'm wanting to do this all myself, and hopefully it won't be too hard...

so all it is is one form get it signed and pay $200 dollars? of course then you have to buy the silencer.

Correct. However I think you buy the silencer first, then fill out the forms. That's why you want to make sure your LEO will sign it. (Law Enforcement Officer). Not too sure on this, don't quote me! lol

Some of the people that I know had problem with earlier ones, and mags. Seems that they're fine now. Just got one, I like it, the wife likes it too (which means it stays).
Yes, you buy the suppressor first then do the papers at your class III dealer. Hard to go wrong with Gemtech. The P22 seems to function better with Mini-Mag, Velocitor and Stinger velocities. Called Gemtech to ask what they use, Remington subsonic, but some people have had good results with CCI standard velocity. He said the can should give it enough back pressure to cycle, or you could try a lighter Wolff spring.

Don't try and use the cheap $10 for 500 rounds boxes of .22 lr. For the P-22 to function flawlessly it needs the high energy stuff.

I saw  really nice one (I think last June) at a gun show-- complete with silencer for right around $600 (I doubt it included the transfer tax of $200).

Check out SubGuns.com and look at the 45 suppressor, it has a movie file of them firing a P-22 w/ a Gemtech suppressor on it. Damn is it silent!! I want one so bad!

ok i went to a range yesterday and shot about about 60-70 rounds through my new 5 inch p22. i had one fail to eject and a couple times fail to fire. i was using a 500 pack of remington high velocity hollow point ammo. yeah i need hollow points for paper. i like the way the gun shoots and so did my girlfriend. i want to buy the short barrel for it and a couple extra magazines with the finger extension. the extension is a little more comfortable.

Below is a summary of my posts to another thread relating to problems with the Walther P22.  In the end, I love shooting my P22 / Gemtech Outback combo, but what a painful process to get there.  You can read below about the problems I experienced, but I’ll warn you, bring a lunch…

From 22 DEC 02:

Well, I thought I had better bring everyone up to date on my struggles with the P22. After reading posts back in June, I disassembled my magazines, and gave them a thorough cleaning. Upon returning to the range, I continued to see the same problems.

I contacted Walther USA, and they indicated that they were experiencing problems with the magazines, and that if I shipped them my malfunctioning unit, they would replace it. I shipped, they replaced, and still the problems persisted. I tried every type of ammo under the sun from stingers to subsonic, with the same results. Eventually, I began to experience problems with both magazines.

My issue was purely a failure to feed problem. Once a round was chambered, the pistol would fire, and the slide would move to the rear position and cleanly eject the spent casing, but would not pick up the next round from the magazine and close on an empty chamber. I would then manually chamber a round, and fire, but would again experience the same result. It was as if the slide was short stroking, not traveling far enough to pick up the next round. As a last ditch effort, I purchased two new magazines to rule this possibility out. Now I had four magazines that would all produced the same results, effectively ruling them out as the source of the problem.

I again contacted Walther and explained my problem and the steps I had taken to rectify the issue. They sent me a pre paid shipping label and asked me to return the pistol and the magazines for service. I did this, and within two weeks received a call from the service manager, who informed me that despite the efforts of two different technicians, my pistol would still not function properly. He told me that they would like to replace my pistol with a new unit; I just needed to provide an address for a local FFL. During this discussion, the manager noticed that I had shipped two additional magazines with my original pistol. He informed me that they were now missing. I said, “well I provided you a total of four magazines”. He replied that the new gun would come with two magazines. I asked, “ You mean two extra magazines”? He said well no. I said, “that was unacceptable. I provided you with a total of four magazines; I expect four to be returned”. He indicated that they would have to be a separate order, and that he would have them sent to home my vice my FFL when the pistol shipped. I said that was fine, but had the feeling that I was getting the brush off to end the call.

After the call I began to wrestle with this in my mind. The gun only cost me $275.00 to begin with. Now I’m going to have to pay $35.00 transfer fee to the FFL, and if I don’t get my magazines back I’ll be out $50.00 there, for a total of $85.00; almost a third of the total cost. I contacted my FFL, and worked out a deal, that since I bought the gun there, the will only charge me the $12.00 for the state.

Much to my disbelief two brand new magazines showed up on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. I have contacted my FFL again, but no pistol yet. So far I’m only out some aggravation and $12.00. Hopefully this new pistol will function properly, and I can be a satisfied customer. I guess time will tell. I’ll keep everyone posted.

From 17 JAN 02:

Well I guess I should close out the story of my situation. The new pistol did finally show up so I picked the pistol up at the FFL dealers, which also happens to be my indoor shooting range. I took the new pistol into the range, and tried it out. After four magazines, not a single failure, however it was shooting groups that were consistently 4 inches low and to the right. When I screwed my Outback Suppressor on, it began shooting 4 inches high and left. I took the suppressor back off and examined it only to find that I was getting some minor baffle strikes. Not Good! Off to the local gunsmith I go, to get his opinion. We started wrestling with the problem, and with a stainless steel rod he uses to gauge barrel alignment with suppressors, we discovered that the end of the barrel was not quite .22 in diameter. We could not pass the rod through the end with out getting slightly snagged. Further inspection revealed that the barrel had some how become slightly crimped. We figure as the bullet traveled down the barrel, just before it exited, the barrel was grabbing just enough lead to cause the bullet to veer off course. Fortunately my smith was able to cut the last two threads off, re-crown, and rethread the barrel. This removed the crimped portion. I returned to the range, and now the pistol is an absolute tack driver. Super accurate, not a single failure to function after 500 rounds, and with the suppressor on…I’ve heard louder pellet guns. In the end I am very happy with my package. Would I go through the same painful process again to arrive at this point of satisfaction, probably not? Based on receiving another defective product from Walther, as a replacement for the originally defective product, I cannot say that I would readily recommend Walther to my friends. That being said, it’s a lot of cheep fun to shoot, and just looks cool. Hopefully Walther can get their act together so more people can enjoy their product.

Wouldn't an integrally suppressed Ruger .22 handgun be better than the Walther P-22 then?

Picked up a P-22 several months ago at the local toy show.  Sorry "but a face only a mother could love", if you know what I mean  ! !

Anyway, must have between 300-400 rounds thru it, with two different mags.  As long as I use a "hi-speed" type of ammo, she runs 100%.

Love mine, too.  Ya gotta use the H.V. stuff and I only load 8 rounds in the mags...works pretty good that way...the newer ones are supposed to be even better...mine's an earlier model (impulse buy)

Picked mine up for $215 at Galyans.  I like it, but now I want the suppressor for it which is going to cost nearly three times what I paid for the gun!  Shoot hot ammo and it'll work fine... mine also really likes those 66 grain sniper SSS rounds by Aguila, they shoot more reliably (and quieter) than anything else I've put through it.  And I've heard that the can makes the gun work a little more reliably with subsonic ammo, but I can't confirm.
