I think I have decided to go the 1911 style .45 pistol route for my first pistol. I have pretty much narrowed it down between kimber and wilson. I was wondering what you guys all thought? Yes, I know its expensive, but I believe that you pay for what you get and I have also heard that wilson has outstanding customer service.

The only other handgun I have really considered getting is a usp compact in .45 but yet again, am unsure.

Good choice on the 1911's.  The Kimbers and the KZ are generallly the same price (for higher end Kimbers).  They are both good companies that make a fine product.  It all depends really on whether you want a traditional 1911 grip or the polymer body of the KZ.

Now the USP's are a completely different breed.  i personally do not like them.  Even the compact is a bit fat in the grip and too short at the same time.  The grip is too blocky (though not as blocky as a Glock, but wider than a Glock) and just doesn't fit right in my hand.  I am a 1911 man and do not like the feel of the USP or USP compact at all.

However, you should try and find a place where you can handle both and see which one fits you better.

It's best to go out and shoot the pistols you are wanting to buy.. to see which one you'd rather have.

I know a couple places that have the kimbers and uspcs in their lobby but I have never seen a kz-45 compact in a lobby that is able to be looked at.

So has anyone here shot or handled the kz-45 compact?

the wilson has a polymer frame and a lifetime warranty but mags are expensive.

I would probably buy the wilson everyone has a kimber.

I've handled the Wilson KZ-45 full size. It's a nice weapon. I'm in the same position as you as well. i'm looking for my first .45.

Looking at this...

Kimber Custom CDP II Retail $1300

this...

Wilson CQB Retail $1800

and this.

Wilson KZ-45 Retail $1100

Leaning real heavily towards the Kimber right now. Just a real clean weapon, very good balance and pointability. Fit my hand very well.

I agree.  Once you get into a certain price range, you might as well go for a true custom shop model.  The higher end Kimbers are really not that much better than the regular ones like the custom classic.

Either get a Wilson or get a Kimver Custom Classic or Kimber Eclipse or even a Springfield Loaded Model and have it customized once you get used to the weapon and have put a few hundred rounds through it to test reliability and accuracy.

I am seriously leaning towards the kz-45 compact. I was just hoping to hear from someone who had personally shot one.
