I love my 1911's and G21, but I wanted a new .45 for some reason.  I like carrying them camping as there are lots of gators where we go and the .45 seems to be the best round to get them to go away.  Have shot a few with several different calibers and it seems like the .45 always knocks them the hardest, same goes for the rouge sow/boar wandering in to the campsite as well.  Anyway, decided on my first Sig, the P220 Elite in stainless.

Wow!  The P220 Elite SS is just what I wanted.  More heft than the G21, soft shooting and so easy to aim.  Night sights for when I am waking up in the tent and can locate the pistol in just seconds in the dark.  Reliable as the G21 it seems.  Not as many rounds in the mag like my Para P14 or G21 but it's not my SD carry gun so it's cool, no mobs in the woods.

The P220 might be the ultimate .45....

Great Guns.  Id check out the p220 combat too.  I own several sigs a p220 combat is a favorite.  I had an elite.  Great gun but didn't shoot it often.

It was all I could do to talk myself out of a 227...failed to do so with a 220 10mm.

When you get the itch for another 45ACP take a feel of a Sig P227. This is my favorite pistol. If i could only keep one pistol, it would be the P227 that i kept.

If I was doing a Sig in .45 this is the only logical answer the P227.  With the tac mags it would be good to go.

Not to derail but I thought the 227 suffered from a lot of reliability issues? I did really enjoy my elite p220 intron with trigger work when I had it.

My P227 has gone thru 2000 flawless rds. 3 years back guys where whining about the 14 rd mags being unreliable. My 14 rd mag is in my P227 on my night stand, it 14 rd mag has also been flawless. I haven't seen any complaints on the P227 in years, they are GTG

I almost went with the P227 but for some reason I liked the feel of the P220 and I already have 2 DS .45's.  I've been on a single stack kick for a while.

Add a SRT and a 18 lb hammer spring and you have a nice shooting Sig, all of mine have them. My 220 reset is damn close to a 1911 trigger.

My brother in law bought a new P220 scorpion elite about a month ago. That is the nicest pistol I have ever shot. The way it pointed, fit my hand, the controls, the trigger. At 10 yards you could keep all 8 rounds in one ragged hole if you did you part. We put close to 300 rounds through it that day. 100% reliable of course, but it was USGI ball.

I bought a  220r last year and have only been able to take it out a few times, but she is really growing on me.

Just got that .22lr conversion kit, which is far more fun than I thought it would be.

Maybe I will look into that 18lb hammer spring, the DA is totally wacky to me as a striker guy.

If you practice enough with it, you wont even notice and it will become second nature but you have to put the time in. I carried a DA/SA .45 damn near all of my career up until 2 years ago when we switched from ghe 220ST to the 9mm 320 carry. Trust me, if you put the time in you wont notice the DA pull at all especially if you add the 18 lb hammer spring.

I have multiples of both.  The USA made guns are just as good.  Neither have given me issues.

My USA made P220s have been superbly accurate and reliable.

I tend to agree the P220 is one of the best .45's on the market, it just feels right. I've owned .45 Glocks, .45 M&P's as well as 1911's... but they've all come and gone. My 220 is here to stay. Really enjoy shooting it!

Thanks for the info.  I had one of the W. German guns back in the only one fun gun days....when I was younger and poorer.  It got sold to try something else.

Time for another one!

IMHO , The older bent sheet MTL slide 220's have a much better feel and balance . The big knock against the 220 new and old is the finish wear you get on the anodized lower , they scratch and knick way too easy and fast. But for those that don't mind some patina/ character the 220 is an outstanding pistol.

The newer ones are fine; I didn't really notice any difference...and the newer ones have a huge advantage over the old folded metal slide ones:

Try finding spare parts, like extractors, breech blocks, etc for them now...Sig stopped making them. Better hope you never break any of the folded slide-specific parts. You can still get the inner and outer breech block pins for now, but that supply will eventually dry up too...they're still great guns, they just have a lack of spare parts now. I wouldn't mind picking up an older folded slide one if I can find one in good condition at a good price.

FWIW, I've got a recent manufacture steel framed P220 that I love and carry, when I'm not carrying my P220 Compact. Awesome little gun.

No worry on parts , I have spares of every part I bought years ago when I had Grayguns go through mine and smooth out the triggers of both mine .

The P227 doesn't seem to be popular based on the fact that:

A:  I never see them
B:  There are not nearly as many models available as other P-series

How different was the grip?  Since it only adds 2 rds over the 220 I always assumed the grip wasn't much thicker.

Its not much thicker, it feels like a 226 in the hand. Sig really screwed the pooch with the hit or miss 14 round mags, most were unreliable. Plus they stick out so damn far.

Sig web site is selling 14Rd mags for $30, paid $50 for mine 2 yrs ago. Mine is GTG, on my night stand P227. Nothing wrong with 14+1 rds of 45ACP goodness for that bump in the night. P227 is a great fucking pistol. Bet you life on it, it is the size of a P226.

I just sold a 227 Equinox a few weeks ago It was nice and all but between that and the 220...I just preferred the 220 to the point where 2 extra rounds weren't enough to justify the girth of the 227 to me. It shot ok but it felt / balanced really differently in my hand than a 220 did.

Fortunately I was able to parlay that 227 into a steel framed 220 in 45, so that worked out for me...

Honestly I think it might have been more the E2 grip that was a huge culprit; it squirmed in my hands when shooting, and beyond that it's just not shaped right for me..it's thin in the wrong places, if that makes sense? I actually sprung for a set of Hogue hardwood grips for it, but those didn't really improve it much, either. Weirdly I'm finding that the factory Sig grips, or the big Hogue rubber grips, seem to fit me best...the factory Sig grips are really slim but they have a decent heel portion to them which seems to work for me.
