[ARCHIVED THREAD] - 10 MM comeback? (Page 1 of 2)

Does it seem the big 10 is making a comeback?  I bought a G40' and am buying a G20 today.  Seems like a lot of discussion and threads on the 10.  Pretty cool I think.

My next pistol will be a 10mm.

I finally shot my friend's 10mm S&W.  I like it.  It's heavy stainless, so recoil isn't bad at all.  Will probably consider it for an additional caliber, currently I just have 9mm and 45acp pistols.  Gotta start collecting brass, boolits, and ammo.  That's how I know I'll be buying one soon, when I get a stock of food for it ready.

I just got in to the 10mm club. Found a new G29 gen 3 at the gun shop and snapped it up. Fun shooter for sure and it runs 40 S&W just fine for plinking too. It conceals well in a Remora pocket holster and is my new carry for when I'm out in the hills, replacing my S&W model 29 . I mean what's not to like?

[#4]
These unpopular calibers are always in a chicken-and-egg sort of situation.   Nobody wants the caliber unless they have a gun to shoot it out of and the ammo is reasonable, the gun companies won't build a gun because the ammo is scarce, and the ammo companies won't produce the ammo because nobody owns a gun to shoot it.

It does look like 10mm is seeing a comeback of sorts.  I think you'll see it accelerate up to a certain point and then plateau as long as 10mm ammo holds its current pricing levels.

All we need is an M&P or P320 or something chambered in it and it will catch fire big time I think

I want a 10mm USP and Sig P227

Seems like it.

Though I still remember the Vltor Bren 10-Fortis fiasco.

For those seeking ammo, GA Arms has good pricing on their "canned heat" in 1K bulk packs.

For those seeking a 10mm, I've owned both a Glock 29 & 20SF. Sold them both. Owned a Tangfolio as well, sold it too. My keepers are a STI 1911 Nitro & RIA Commander, obviously both in 10mm.

The RIA is a pleasant surprise considering its moderate cost. The STI is cheaper than a Dan Wesson & a better gun, IMO.

For those thinking about a new truck or nightstand gun, RIA also makes a 2011 in 10mm. Might be the perfect nightstand gun, IMO.

Hope this helps someone thinking about a 10mm.

I've been considering the new SR1911. Americans cycle through calibers... same applies to law enforcement, federal agencies, and the military. We go up and down on the bore sizes.

I agree with screw SA but once they do it they'll force other companies to follow suit because they'll be stealing sales

Yeah I'm carrying a Glock 20 10mm for my duty gun currently. Might pick up a Glock 29 and/or build a custom 1911 in 10mm for conceal carry.

My CCW for the past six years has been a G29sf and I have a Gen4 G20 as well for a woods gun. I love the cartridge and it's one of the most versatile out there. I just wish H&K would make a friggin USP chambered in 10mm! For the love of God H&K, please make this happen. We have waited long enough!

I've been interested in the 10mm since I first read about the Dornaus & Dixon Bren Ten from their ad in Shotgun News (which I was disappointed with when D&D failed to deliver guns with magazines and later went bankrupt). I purchased one of the new S&W 1076 pistols (sold it because I didn't like S&W semi-auto pistol design) and later bought one of the new (back then) NIB Colt Delta Elite 10mm pistols. Took it back to the gun store for a refund after I discovered it was defective (never been shot before) when the thumb safety was stuck and the plunger tube broke off the frame. I later learned that Colt was experiencing labor problems (labor strikes and layoffs) and their quality control went down the toilet. Now I've owned a Kimber Custom TLE/RL II 10mm and sold it to fund a Dan Wesson Silverback 10mm and also own a DW Specialist Commander 10mm and a NHC Recon Enforcer 10mm. As far as I'm concerned the 10mm didn't need any comeback because it never left.

Good boy, you are contributing to the cause! I love how the G40 feels in my hand.

I think it's making a comeback but it's also a niche caliber. I think it's growing among enthusiasts and hunters, which is good.

Eventually I want to get into reloading for mine.

I've seen it at my pawnshop. People are asking about/looking for 10mm. Seems like every year there's some buzz caliber. Right now, 10mm is the flavor of the month.

If you don't already have a Glock 20, I don't know what to say. 10mm never went away, so it isn't correct to refer to a "come back."

They are not popular because, most people can't shoot them. Hell, they cry about the .40 being snappy.

[#25]
Ok,  so allow me to further clarify myself, with the "come back".    The .380 never went extinct either now did it? But with ammo advancements, and people making guns, it is one of the most popular small calibers out there today.

I am fully aware the 10 mm never went extinct. However it seems a lot of threads are based around it, and there are a lot of new guns out there now in the 10 mm.  I guess a better way of saying it, Is it is regaining a lot of popularity. In fact I bought a Glock 40 a couple of weeks ago, bought a Glock 21 yesterday, and traded a buddy for another Glock 21 today.

It just seems to me, just an observation, that it is picking up a lot of traction that it did not have a year or two ago.

There's been an uptick in 10mm for about 5 years now. I've sold more 10mm's in the last five years than the previous 20 combined, IMO.

For a while, the 10mm was right down there with the .41AE, .327mag & .45GAP.

Now I bet I sell more 10mm's than .44mag.

I was thing more like men that wish they were well endowed and where compensating.

If you look at 10mm objectively it has potential.  It can do many jobs fairly well, ie jack of all trades, though IMHO master of very few.  The biggest problem with 10mm Auto is the fanboys.  They hype the round so much that it does a disservice to those that look for honest information on the cartridge.

So what's a decent factory 10mm cartridge to stockpile? I picked up a glock 20 in trade this weekend and I want to order a case of something that isn't just a little longer 40S&W.

I don't think it ever went away to have a comeback.  We've had a good variety of guns, and it keeps getting better.    I'd call it really slow growth vs going away and making a comeback.

The Glock 29 and 20 are both easier to shoot than the 27 (or 23) and 22 IMO.   10mm is vastly overrated on recoil.  Just like I've had people freak out over shooting 458 when I've been hurt worse by a 12 GA.

Underwood is synonymous with full power factory loads.  Ducta-Bright 7a plated Starline brass, choice of Gold Dots, XTPs, hard cast or Nosler bullets, this is nice stuff.

While I don't have a 10mm, I have purchased thousands of rounds for my stash in .40 and .357 Sig.  As a previous poster mentioned, Georgia Arms is a good source of range ammo, and Gold Dots a tad cheaper than Underwood, without the plated brass.  I've purchased about a thousand rounds of .357S there also

Yep the recoil is over exaggerated. There isn't much comparison between semi auto and revolver recoil, the semi auto absorbs it. If you have been used to shooting 44 and 45Colt you will find 10mm isn't bad.

From what I've read, the Sig ammo is decently hot range stuff.  I bought some yesterday along with some Remington I know will be weak, just to compare.

Another "factory" load that's full power is supposed to be the Federal Trophy Bonded.  Then there's Buffalo Bore, underwood, and Doubletap.  I'm gonna get a 6" barrel to shoot some of the 220 Gr. Hard cast out of to test.   My thoughts.....what will kill a bear, will probably work in the house.

The SIG ammo is one of only a couple brands that loads actual 10mm power plinking ammo. The rest is just glorified .40 S&W.

Buy the best one you can afford, IMO. If you like the 1911 feel, look at the STI & Dan Wesson. If you like the service gun feel, look at Sigs.

If you don't want to make a huge investment until you know you like the 10mm, look at Rock Island.

The nice thing about the 10mm right now is one isn't overwhelmed with choices as one could be in a 9mm.

Realistically the stock .45 USP will already take .45 Super which out powers 10mm so there really isn't a need for a 10mm USP, .45 ACP for city .and .45 Super for the woods.

The loads I'm seeing look almost identical bullet weight for bullet weight, but the 10mm has superior sectional density.

I'd love to convert my USP to 10mm but finding an aftermarket .40 barrel to ream out is almost impossible now.
