For the first time , I've had a problem with my RIA 1911. Today I was at the range and every time I hit the magazine release, the slide would slam shut. It also wasn't holding the slide back reliably each and every time. I have an extended slide stop and wondered if that might be the problem. Thanks in advance guys.  maxx

have you tried different mags (quality mags--wilson, novak, ect) with known good followers and springs?

I have 1 Mec-Gar, 1 Novak and 1Kimber mag. It does these things with all mags. I'll try a couple of mags from a friend of mine.   maxx

is the slide stop a recent modification?

I've had the slide stop on there for about 1 month. It has worked fine my last 2 trips to the range.    maxx

Re-install the original slide stop and try it out before condemning the gun.
Extended slide stops, especially unfitted "drop ins" have been known to cause other problems too.
When ever you change a part and there is a problem, just put the original working part back in.

sounds like your mag was holding the slide open and once you removed the mag your new slide stop was not holding the slide. It could be rounded off or not fit properly.  There is no such thing as "drop in" parts.

Unfortunately , I don't have the original slide stop. I swapped it out with one from another 1911 that I don't have anymore. Should I have a gunsmith fit a new one, or just buy a new non-extended slide stop?  Thanks for all the help guys.   maxx

Are you using a shock buff of any kind??  The added thickness of the shock buff will inhibit the rearward travel of the slide by its thickness and that might be your problem.  Also look at how the slide stop it engaging the notch on the slide and see if it is fully engaging.  Maybe the machining of the engagement surface is not right.  Are the loads you're using any different from previous times??  Lighter loads will not cycle the slide back as positively as full charge loads and that might also be something to consider.

No shock buffer, I was told a while ago not to use those.  maxx

CP Shock Buff from Brownell's...these are the shit!!!!

Get a Wilson Bullet Proof slide stop....it's not "extended" per se but has an awesome profile that is really easy to operate.  It definitely sounds like your current stop has gone out of shape or has chipped.  Ditch it for a Wilson.
