I'm toying with the idea of plunking down for a 19L setup. It's going to run me about $1100 for a barrel, slide, RMR, spring/guide rod and spacer cover. I do not currently have a handgun with an optic on it, so that would be a notable change, but other than that, is there that much of a perceived benefit to running the longer slide/barrel combo on a compact frame? It seems cool and while I have some money to blow, $1100 still in my possession is also pretty cool.
Also, anyone with pics would be appreciated. |

Um you mean a 17? 19L=17? ![]() 19XL = 34 slide on a 19 frame. Lone Wolf page |
| Yeah, that idea crossed my mind, but I don't think you're really saving that much. A 17 MOS from Buds is $600 plus another $550 for the RMR and the work to either chop the frame myself (and screw it up) or pay someone to do it. Kinda comes out as a wash at best, right? |

No now you'll have two guns instead of just an extra G19 slide. ~~~~~~~~~ The majority of what I was posting about though was the experience of shooting a long slide 19. Is it a noticeable upgrade or difference from a standard length? I'm intrigued by the idea and just wanted some feedback on the platform as I know it's been done before. |

That is true, but the argument was that it would save a lot of money which I don't think is true. I'd just be getting more for my money. ~~~~~~~~~ The majority of what I was posting about though was the experience of shooting a long slide 19. The oft spoken advantage of a longer barrel is the sight radius aiding in precision. Well, a red dot is going to eliminate the need for that. I am not a Roland Special koolaid drinker, but the pro/con here is the theory that they are supposed to fill. The barrel is longer and with the brake, you're increasing muzzle control without sacrificing velocity, but with the carry/portability of the shorter grip and lighter slide. |
| There's no point in going through all that trouble to make a "19L" if you're just going to put an RMR on it. The main advantage to the longer slide/barrel is the added sight radius...there's no sight radius with a red dot. Just get a 19 MOS if you want to try an RMR. |

I'd chop a $300 PD trade in G22 and add a red dot mount to the rear sight cut or buy one of the back plate RMR mounts before I had another slide cut. Huge price savings, but not as tier 1 or as permanent.
I just purchased 2 $130 frames from Combatarmory.com and waiting on them to show up at my FFL so I can make a G23L from one of them with a spare G22 top end I have in my parts box |

I'll go against the tides here and recommend that you do it. I build a 23L and my 19L will be finished tomorrow just as soon as the USPS drops off my new barrel. I also have a grip chopped 17, which is nice and a low cost stopgap, but the L just appeals to me more aesthetically. I don't own a G19, but have owned a G17 and G34. I traded my G34 for an RMR which I had installed on my G17.
1) I never noticed a difference between my accuracy with either using iron sights. Maybe a USPSA grand master can notice the difference, but I can't. 2) With an RMR, it is completely irrelevant. That extra slide length going from a G19 to G17 means almost nothing with irons, and should have zero impact with an RMR. 3) The choice of pistol should be completely dependent on grip comfort and concealability. I am most comfortable with the G17 grip, and have no major issues concealing it, so that's what I did. I'd just get a G19 or G17 as the base for the project, and not do anything funky, but that's just me.

Would not it be cheaper to just cut a G17 to take G19 mags? $500 vs $1100? |

The 17 length top end makes a difference to me. I shoot 'em measurably better than a 19. I don't get along with the 19 grip either. A chopped 17 is my favorite Glock |
