Not sure if this belongs here or in the gunsmith discussion but anyhow I'm wanting to buy a rear sight pusher for changing sights on my handguns. It's not something I do often but every time I buy a new handgun I find myself wanting new sights and have to go see a gunsmith or someone with a sight pusher to change them out. Anyhow, I'm looking for a good quality (not super expensive) universal sight pusher that would fit most handguns. Is there such a thing or do I need to own several different sight pushers for different guns?

It really depends on the sights you buy. I have a couple "universal" pushers, but neither are "ideal" for say, Trijicon HD's. I also have punches.

Here are the 2 "universal" pushers I have.

I have one like this.  I've used it to add TruGlo and Trij sights to 5 pistols (2 M&Ps, 2 Glocks, Kimber). All of the available adjustments and shims makes it very versatile but also a little clumsy to get set up.  It works fine, though.  Good value for the price.

Whichever one you get, watch a few youtube videos before you get started so you don't hack up your slide or (ahem) have to look all over your kitchen for the *&^&^ng spring that shoots out from under the rear sight from some pistols.

I recently purchased the MGW Sight Pro. Not cheap at $300, but MGW makes good stuff. You can adapt it to fit basically any popular handgun by purchasing an $18 "shoe" that fits inside the slide rails. Here is an in-depth look at the tool:

They also make some nice handgun specific sight pushers, but if you plan to install sights on more than 2 platforms, the Sight Pro is probably a better value.

I've been using one of these for the last 7 years. It's done everything I asked form it.

Get an MGW Pro.

I've used it on 5 different platforms, works great.

I have a MGW for Glocks since that is what I own the most of.  I have a brass punch and a small hammer for everything else.

I'll bet that is really nice assuming it's built like their other products.  I have a Glock specific MGW and it is fantastic.  Quality tool that can be passed down for generations.

Yes. I had their M&P pusher - it was great. I wanted to buy the M&P Shield pusher too, but decided I would probably be better off (cost-wise) in the long run to get the Pro and sell the one I had. Platform changes are only ~$18 for the Pro.

I bought one from D.D. Machine about a year ago on Amazon for $44.  It's American made and the quality is great for the price.

It came with several different blocks for various slide shapes, and it's worked well on a half dozen pistols so far.

The main caution I've noted with it is that you need to reverse the unit when switching from pushing to pulling, so that you are always tightening on the bolt side, rather than the nut side.

It's not show, but it comes with stick on fluffy side velcro as padding for the slide, and it works very well, as long as you replace it when it starts to wear - but it's cheap by the roll.

I had the opportunity to use a MGW Pro universal pusher yesterday.  It's a bit complicated, but it's a really impressive tool.
