In the modern world of pocket guns, pretty obsolete, but for some strange reason I want one.
Maybe I watched too many western movies with my dad when I was young, but I've always wanted one. Who makes the best quality, and what caliber would be best for a truly probably never going to get shot outside the range, but I might actually carry it, derringer? |
| My dad has the Bond Arms with the .45LC/.410 barrel and the .357 mag one. Heavy little bitch. I had one in .357 long time ago although IIRC was American Derringer which at the time was made in Waco Tx. I think they were bought out and thus Bond Arms now although not sure. The one I had was a 2" and .357 mags you knew you were shooting a .357 mag. |

I want that double shot gun, not a mini revolver. So what caliber loads are most pleasant to shoot at the range out of the gun? I'm thinking a 9mm or .38 would be good. It will truly be a range toy, so I want it to be not harsh to shoot like my J-frame, that I actually carry. I'm aware with the small size of the gun, it's going to pack a punch, so I want the lightest punch in a real SD caliber. |

I've owned two Derringers in my life. First a Chrome Davis in .25 ACP, small and light enough to go running with back in the mid 80s. Switched to a Gerber Guardian when I went to Germany and gun shot itself apart when my sister was shooting it.
Second is a ADC Model 7 Lightweight in .380 ACP, two shoots in a 11 oz gun. Bought when Clinton was in office in the mid 90s. That one my sister still has on a long extended loan. Its a handful even in that lightweight .380 You want to fire the top barrel first if I remember. Its not small like the Davis derringer but almost as large as a Smith 442 (IIRC). Same same of the Bonds but lighter. Today I'll rather by a LCP instead of a M7. 6+1 rounds compared to 2 and few ounces lighter.

I have a Cobra in 38 Special. I won't say its the best out there, but it goes bang every time. In an extremely painful and unpleasant matter. Not a fun gun to shoot. You might want to rethink this idea. Maybe I'll just get one in small caliber, like a .22. For some reason I've always wanted one. |

I have a Cobra 9mm that I got as a best man gift. Awesome to look at. Painful and hard to shoot. I put 10 rounds through it once and my hand ached for the rest of the day. As mild as 9mm is, and the responses I've gotten, maybe I should steer away from a derringer. I want it to be a gun I actually shoot for fun from time to time. Hell, even stout loads in my J-frame suck to shoot, but it doesn't leave my hand aching all day. |

To not hurt the hand you need either smaller caliber/lower velocity and bullet weight or increase weight/size of gun. Just find one in .22LR for a range toy. .41 RF too hard to find for the originals. CD |

if you want comfortable don't get a Bond Arms 44 Magnum after 2 rounds I will only bring out out to let friends who think they are bad ass have some fun :) Other than that I am very happy with the 4 other Cal. Bonds I own. |

| A friend gave me his .45 ACP Bond on my wedding day. I have shot about 100 rounds through it. I don't find recoils to be terrible. It is a little difficult to shoot well, the geometry with the trigger makes things wierd. I would really like the 6 inch .410 barrels that are coming out for it. |

The older Hi Standard .22 Magnum derringers have always appealed to me, and were considered at the time to be pretty good kit: http://media.liveauctiongroup.net/i/14676/14986279_1.jpg?v=8CFA0D511539DA0 If you want something somewhat useful, but extremely punishing, the DoubleTap 9mm is the most modern/practical derringer out there. http://truthaboutguns-zippykid.netdna-ssl.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/110.png They are great. Need to learn to shoot them with your middle finger. |

Look at the Bullfrog form P-Tec I think, made in the USofA when I see one I'm going to buy it. PTAC Bullfrog mini revolver? https://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/product_info.php/products_id/719003107/Firearms/Handguns/Other+Handguns/PTAC+BULLFROG+22WMR+22LR+COMBO+1-1%2F8+BULL+B Mini revolvers are cool, but I'm really more interested in an old school 2 barrel Derringer. |
