so i asked this question in the S&W page but haven't gotten much feedback but

a friend of mine just purchased and new fullsize M&P40 last week, wilst shooting it this weekend and after depleting the first mag, when inserting a new mag with the slide locked back, it slammed the slide home..and quite literally scared the bejesus out of him.  so he asked me today if this was normal and since i don't know much about the MP40's i turn to yous guys.  is this normal or not.. my experience says no.. most that i've dealt with you either hit the slide release or rack it..  what say you.. thanks in advance

Mine does it.  I think it's fairly common.

I had a Glock that did it too (g27).  Also had an M&P9 pro long slide that did it

My Glock 19 does not.

It's called "auto forwarding", and it's pretty common with the M&P, regardless of caliber.  Most seem to do it to some degree or another.

I could make a Beretta 92 do it with some consistency as well.

My VTAC always did that, and sometimes one of my VP9's does it too.

It was the only thing I like about my M&P40.  Slap the mag in and send the slide home; one less step.

Given a good bump as you seat the mag will drop the slide. I like it and find it quicker to get back on target.

100% normal. Happens on all 1911's, BHP's, M&P's, Glocks, etc... The only semi-auto's that I cannot get to "auto-chamber" are my CZ pistols...

It's not an intentional "feature" but as stated, if you slap the magazine hard enough on a lot of pistols, the bump will cause the slide stop to disengage, sending the slide forward.

um.. im gonna have to disagree with you on this specific part of your statement.  i have owned several 1911's and have shot countless others as well and never had one do this.. despite how "hard" i ram a fresh mag in or what.
but, the point is on the MP.. thanks for the reply as well!

My M&P does it reliably with how I put the mag in.  Not an uncommon occurrence as stated... that's why finger off the trigger until ready to shoot.

Also worth noting that if you have pistols that do that (e.g., my 2011 w/ a 2 1/4 pound trigger), be very aware when letting other people shoot them because their piss poor habits could easily cause a ND.

As others have said very normal on a number of guns.  But don't rely on it working every time.  I've read the Beretta 92 series is design to do this when inserting the mag at a certain angle.  My M9 I have been able to repeat doing it but again it doesn't do it every time. I even had my Glocks do it once in a while...which they claim should never happen.

Mine does but not consistently enough to rely on it.

Curiously it does mostly when I'm under stress.

If inserted with some authority and at the right angle, the M&P will do it every time. If the magazine is inserted gently or perfectly straight in the grip, it does not do it (as a rule).
