Recoil


Recoil energy  is an objective quantity and can be calculated mathematically based on Newton’s Third Law of Motion.  There are three basic components involved in recoil.

1. The bullet acceleration from a state of rest to its muzzle velocity.

2. The effective forward acceleration of the powder charge converted to gas.

3. The muzzle “blast” that occurs when the expanded gasses are released at the muzzle upon the bullet exiting the muzzle.


Some of the factors involved in calculating recoil energy of a handgun include:

>  the weight of the handgun
>  the weight of the bullet
>  the muzzle velocity of the bullet
>  the weight of the powder charge
>  the effective velocity of the powder charge/propellant gasses



The "felt recoil" or "kick" of a handgun, is subjective and therefore not calculable.  However, it can still useful to compare the calculated recoil energies of different handguns (and different loads of ammunition) to understand the main factor influencing "felt recoil."

The graphics below show the recoil energies of a typical 115 grain 9mm load fired from a Glock 19 and then the same load fired from a full-size Kimber 9mm 1911 for comparison.

Interesting, thanks. Looks like the SIG P229 recoils somewhere between the Glock 19 and the 1911.

has anyone put a load cell or accelerometer on both a slide and frame of a pistol and looking at the results?
