[ARCHIVED THREAD] - G17 vs G19 (Page 1 of 2)

Ok guys (and girls), I'm about to make the jump into the Glock game and am looking for some advise from owners.
- I want to stick with 9mm - I do not plan on carrying concealed - I plan on competing with it I'm looking at the 19 and 17 and can't really decide which direction I should go. I have shot a 19 but I have not handled or shot a 17 yet. Looking back through old posts on this site there seems to be equal support for both but the results I'm seeing are pretty old so I thought I'd get an updated opinion. It seems like many view the 19 as the king of 9mm Glocks but for my needs, would the extra length and capacity of the 17 work a little better for me? Thanks in advance for the words of wisdom. |

The 34 will do everything the 17 will do. If just for shooting competition, the 34. If you ever think you may decide to carry, get the 17. Once you hold, and eventually shoot the 17/34, you will understand the hype. This gun will become my main sidearm that I plan on using for HD, classes, competition, etc. I know the range I shoot at has a 17 I can rent so I can go spend a little time with it. Sounds like the consensus is basically just go with what feels better as they are similar/the same functionality wise. Thanks you guys again for the replies and guidance here. |

You plan to shoot competition, and you want 9mm, then you want the Glock34. Skip the 19 and the 17. It won't be only for competition, more of an all around type gun. I just want it to be competition capable. Really trying to find that sweet spot right in the middle. |

| If you're competing in USPSA Production or IDPA, you'll be limited to 10 rounds in the mag anyway, so magazine capacity won't matter. In classes it doesn't matter. 15 vs 17 for home defense is a pretty minimal difference, but OK...use the 17 rd mag. Or a 17 with a +5 extension. Or a 33. Whatever you prefer. |
|
I owned a 17 and a 19 and sold the 17 mainly because I just liked the 19 better. Not real reason other than that. But didn't really have a need for both.
There's not much difference between the two, really. So I'd make sure you fondle or rent and shoot both to see what you like best. Actually I think my biggest reason again the 17 was it was Gen 4 and I just prefer the Gen 3 (my 19 and 22 are Gen 3) Good luck, neither will be a bad decision. |

I had a G19 (Gen 3) for a number of years. I used it for carry, classes, and comps and it worked for all of these things. My hands did not fit it well and I removed the finger bumps. I also put a G17 trigger in it, new sights, and a Vickers' mag release.
I recently picked up a G17 (Gen 4) and it fits my hand much better and is not any harder to conceal for me, so I sold the G19. The G17 only needed new sights, but I added a Vickers' release as well. If I had to do it over again I would have picked a G17 from the get go and skipped the G19. I know you mentioned competition. I am not good enough to notice the difference between a G34 or G17. If I am remembering correctly, there is an old thread on pistol-forum .com that discusses G34 vs G17 for comps. A few of the guys noted that the they did not see much of a difference in their times when using a G34 compared to a G17. It seemed like the recommendation was to save some money and go with the G17. Somewhat on the same topic, I was recently reading a thread on the Beretta Forum about a M9. Search on that site for the thread "M9 still at work overseas" and on page 4 and 5 there were a couple of interesting comments about the G19 vs G17 from a duty perspective. |

Based on your above requirements, 17 all the way. 19 grip squishes your hand up against the trigger guard, and I have small hands. 17 has mo betta sight radius and better grip. You can also carry it concealed with little to no difficulty. |

I'll probably run by the LGS in the next couple days to fiddle around with a 17 and next time I'm at the range I'll rent one to shoot for comparison with the 19. |

For your uses I would seriously consider the 34. The 19 is great but sometimes it's nice to have the extra sight radius. That's kind of why I was thinking 17. I always viewed the 34 as something really built for competition rather than all around use (which of course may be way off base) but I do like the idea of the longer sight radius. I'll definitely check this out as well. |

G17 for what you have planned.
I have a 19 and 34. Next one will be a 17, which I get to shoot frequently due to working at a gun shop. I went with a 34 for USPSA and 3 gun, honestly though there is not much of a difference between the 34 and 17. For a dedicated competition gun I went with the 34 and I'd do it again. For a do everything the 17 works great. I'm just as accurate with the 17 and speed is a wash. |
|
My first Glock pistol was the Model 19 gen 3. About a decade of ownership it is my favorite semi auto pistol. Early this year I was itching for a new gun and ended up with the Glock 34 gen 3. I'm still getting used to it. I'm still gravitating toward my Glock 19 but after I get a few thousand rounds on the Glock 34 my thinking may change.
I don't game, I just like to shoot the hell out of my guns. |

Carried the 19 for years, and when I got the Gen 4 17 I started carrying it. No more difficult to conceal, but it fits my hand significantly better than the 19, and I like the 2 extra rounds in a flush fitting mag.
I also shoot USPSA with it, and it is plenty capable for that. My vote is Gen 4 Glock 17 |

where do you find flush fitting Glock mags??? All the ones I know of stick out the bottom with that chunky floorplate. I'd love a flush fit. Perhaps you don't know the meaning of flush fit? flush fit http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk241/gtv_photos/0518121113.jpg non flush fit http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v22/varoadking/IMG_20150323_211603.jpg which one looks like the Glock? ? 19 for carry, 17 for everything else. if you can conceal the 17 then you do not need the 19. I own a 19 for one reason, it prints less than my 17. so if you don't want to carry it, get a 17. This. I own several handguns, but mostly Glocks. G17 on duty. G23 currently off duty. I carry the G22 more in the winter. G29sf at random. I rarely carry my G27 I prefer 40 personally. |

I don't think he was trying to say what you think he was saying, he probably just couldn't find a picture of a flush fitting Glock magazine in the pistol, not that he was trying to make a 1911 vs Glock joke. |

I love my 19. Its my absolutle favorite carry gun. Im very accurate with it slow fire and pretty good at speed. Ive got heine straight 8 sights that are my favorite. I have a zev comp spring and a 3.5 ghost connector that makes the trigger feel sublime.
Unfortunately its significantly snappier than my 92fs or 226 and at speed I can put the 19 to shame when running drills with either of them. I havnt shot a 17 or 34 but for comp or classes id want the longer slide to slow down the recoil. btw, i dont consider that g19s recoil hard. Its just relative |
