I had two of the same malfunction today that I have some questions about.
The gun (Beretta M9A1) is clean, but very hot after several strings of fire in a class. The round enters the chamber, but doesn't fire. It's very difficult to rack the slide and get the round out, but it does eject after a lot of force is applied, much more than usual, and the next round fires fine. I didn't get to inspect the cases, but this has happened once before while at the range. It was after shooting steel case ammo, so I attributed it to that, but that doesn't really make sense to me either, as the primer wasn't struck at all, IIRC. This has all been with Freedom Munitions 115gr reman ammo, which I've shot several thousand rounds of, with only these three identical failures, all in my M9A1, which gets about 50% of my trigger time. Any ideas what could be causing this? Does it sound like an ammo issue or a gun issue? Thanks in advance for the help. |
| so you fired a bunch of steel cased ammo then went to brass? You probably had carbon buildup in the chamber and that is why the slide opened hard. Maybe the round didn't go off because the slide wasn't fully into battery and the firing pin couldn't contact the primer. |

Today it happened twice without firing any steel whatsoever. |

just a WAG from a reloader... your shooting reman ammo, if the once fired case wasn't resized properly or maybe not resized at all this type of malfunction would be the result. Did you happen to notice the slide position before you got the gun cleared? I'm thinking it was held out of battery by the over size case not fully chambering...this would explain why the primer was not struck.

As the other poster said, there's your problem. Beretta's are pretty forgiving on ammo but they can't feed something that's way out of spec. Allow me to suggest you check out GA Arms 9mm ammo (in bulk) for cost savings. I've been using them for over 10 years now with not a single issue, ever. My .o2 |
| I would definitely be thinking it was the ammo. I would try to buy enough brand name ammo to recreate scenario and see if you get the same issues. Interested to know. It sounds like somehow the chamber is getting... well, maybe gummed up. Or maybe it's just out of spec ammo. |
| I echo other posters whenever a gun acts up step one is default to test with a known quality ammo that worked perfectly in the gun in the past ( factory) I am a long time reloader and everyone ( including ammo companies) make a mistake on occasion. The other issue with rounds not going off can be a high primer in the round. The first hit of the firing pin, instead of igniting it drives it deeper into the primer pocket . |
| Thanks for all of the feedback. I just got in a case of their newly manufactured ammo, not the remans that I usually shoot, so I'll shoot it through the Beretta. If it's good to go, I'll just stick with the new stuff from now on. It's not much more expensive anyways. |
