Simple miscommunication. I had my 9mm AR, XD-40, and Sig 220 45.  I had ammo for all three out.  I told my friend (gun owner and perfectly competent) to shoot the Sig. He said he asked if it was 40 cal and pointed at the Sig.  I thought he said, or all I heard was “is this the Sig”.  So I said yes.  Then went to the next lane over to shoot my other friends’ Beretta 92.  My friend shot and then said MIKE!! and showed me this shell casing.  He had fired a 40S&W in my 45ACP Sig.  Both our faults.  Just a miscommunication.

It fired.  No damage to the gun. But it failed to cycle.

I guess we finally found a way to make my Sig jam.

I love my Sig. Not a mark on it, and it damn near cycled.

Sorry for the blurry pics.

Hello

No offense, but you let him handle it - I figure because he has handled firearms before?

It does say right on the side what caliber it is?  He didn't even look the gun over before operating it?

Just wondering - I don't see how you could mistake a .45 acp for a .40 s&w

nice that it didn't blow up, but it seems like something that shouldn't have happened...

.380 fires from a S&W 5946 9mm sometimes. I don't suggest you try it.

I wouldn't think the feed lips in the mag would retain the .40, but without a Sig mag on hand, I can't say.  Shooting a .380 in a 9mm won't hurt anything (As long as the extractor holds the round against the bolt face, it should fire)  , it just won't cycle most 9mms.  In a survival situation though, no problem.

Have you ever tried to put a complete .40S&W bullet and casing down a .45 barrel?  It just slides through all the way out the muzzle.  I don't see how it locked up with the .40 round tight against the striker?  Oh well who knows, but try it sometime try to put a .40 down a .45 barrel.  It just falls out.

Yep , I have tried this too. Also a 9mm will fall right thru a .40 barrel.  The cartridge must have been really loose in the chamber. Lots of carridges will fire in the wrong gun, but I wouldn't recommend it.

I fired a 7.62x25 round out of a 9mm once by accident. Didn't cycle the action and didn't hurt anything but it id teach me to be more careful.
I have heard of someone firing a 9mm round out of a 7.62x25 pistol once. Alledgely the gun held together which frankly amazes the shit out of me.
