Since Smith & Wesson magazines for the 3913 and similar designs have become so expensive lately, I decided to take a chance on ordering a ProMag for the pistol in the off chance it might be ok.

Got it in the mail, well packaged and as slick looking as MecGar magazines.  The magazine was nicely finished, no funky welds, neatly marked with numbered witness holes and proudly lettered, "Made in USA."

Of course, I knew I was in the shit as soon as I put it in the pistol.  It did not seat correctly, big gap between the floor plate and the butt of the gun.  Needless to say it did not function correctly, either.  $20 up the flu, but at least I tried.

The rant part:

How damned hard is it to make pistol magazines?  I mean, we're not talking about something new under the sun.  This product has existed for more than a hundred years.
Why go to the trouble to produce a lousy product with no chance of ever selling more than one to the same person?
How do these people stay in business making what are famously bad pistol magazines?

There.  I feel a little better now.  Not $20 better, but better.

Promags work great in my M&P, I guess it's luck of the draw?

Oddly I've never had any issues with promag. Have 16rnd 1911 and 30rnd five seven mags. feed great, fit great... must be great.

These are the guys that make the 3ft long 30 round 1911 mags right?  That says it all right there.

I agree with you.  It shouldn't be an Art form, but Mec gar certainly treats it like one while everyone else is content to stamp them out like they were making trash can liners.

Edit are
You looking for 3913tsw 7 rounders or CS9 mags by any chance?

I know it's not a pistol mag, but it's still a Promag.  Since I'm in Soviet Russia NY, the 20 round ruger mags for my Mini-30 can't be acquired in-state.  So, that leaves me with 5 round ruger, or 10 round promag.  The promag mags... well, they suck.  The followers tilt really easily, and don't put enough force on the bullet end of the cartridge, and the last round catches on the top edge of the magazine instead of feeding properly.

Every. Damn. Time.

I don't think Promag will fix this, either.  Happens on all 4 of my magazines.  Not a big fan of them.

Pro-Mags are definitely hit-or-miss. I have some for my USP-45 that work perfectly. In fact, they're all I use. Why put wear and tear on nice $50 factory HK mags for range work when the Pro-Mags work just as well?

I've had them for a Hi Power, however, that were absolute garbage.

No, just some plain old factory magazines for the 3913, 908, etc.

I have never had a ProMag magazine that worked 100%. I do not even consider them for range mags.

Your rant is completely valid.

Duplicating a magazine isn't exactly rocket science.

That being said, I only have one ProMag and it's for an LCP.  Functions just fine.

They are crap, but that said I have two for my P220 that work great.

I'll keep an eye out for you man.  I need a few as well, but no more than that.

Once in awhile they work, but they're just crap all around. A company based on making magazines that can't make a quality magazine...yep. Maybe their other accessories are keeping them afloat.

Why have 1 magazine that works when you can buy 2 that don't? If you're a fan of that logic, buy Promag.

I've previously sworn of Promag before, but that's got me considerin'...

That company deserves every inch of their shitty reputation.

People whose opinions I respect say that, unlike the rest of the garbage they make,  the M&P Pro Mags are GTG.

I have never seen a "PRO-MAG" product work dependably. I was suckered on a couple during the '94AWB (they are now buried deep in the berm at my range) and as an RSO, I have seen countless problems with guns resolved simply by removing the offending "PRO-MAG" or "USA Magazine" product.

Me either.  Friends don't let friends waste $$ on pro mag garbage.
