Hey everyone, So I picked up a shield a few months ago and finally had some time to take it to the range...I noticed that every round had a pretty significant chunk taken out of the primer itself. Visualization of the firing pin didn't reveal anything and I tried two different brands of ammo, both with the same result...So, my question is, what are your thoughts on this? I've never noticed any of my other SA's doing this, including a full size M&P. http://s28.postimg.org/gy5ghc62x/IMG_1034.jpg Thanks, CBM Looks scary to me--I'd send a pic to S&W. |

I have a Shield in 9 and 40 and they both do that to the primers. I have not observed any ill-effects and they go bang every time I pull the trigger. Hmm good to know. Sorry to be pulling this thread out of the graveyard, I haven't been in a position to follow up on the issue. I have contacted S&W support and am awaiting a response. It's good to know that I'm not the only one seeing this, but at the same time, as others have stated, I don't see how this could be normal. Haven't seen anything out of the ordinary on cleaning/inspection of the firing pin. |

My wife's Shield didn't do this but I did completely strip all the parts from slide and receiver and clean them before firing. There was a lot of heavy grease in it and you will need to re-install striker assembly bone dry NO LUBE.
Your striker safety could also be filled with lube or burr and be slowing down the striker as it lets it get past the safety plunger. Her Shield does however bulged brass on +P loads or hot loads with thin brass, think BrassMax or fiocci. Does not however bulge with Hornady 135gr +P critical duty or Winchester Q4364 147Gr rangers, probably since its thicker better quality brass. |

I just received this response from S&W:
"Dear Customer, That is normal for the M&P series, the mark is made during the unlocking of the action. If further assistance is required please reply accordingly. Sincerely, Paul G" There we have it...It is normal, however odd it may be. Oddly, my full-size M&P doesn't do this. |
