I'll be purchasing my second 1911 the day I turn 21. I've had my eyes set on a SA loaded because it met a lot of my requirements, but I've been reading more and more and there seems to be some reliability issues. Several days ago I read several comments about the SW being extremely accurate out of the box, but I hate the huge logo plastered on the side of the gun and I'm still leary of the external extractor.

Can you guys please help me choose a gun that fit into these requirements?

High cut beavertail - I'm using a STI beavertail right now
Fixed sights - Novak or Heinie
Accurate
Reliable
Good waranty service
Black in color
GI guide rod
extended thumb safety
and 600-700 dollars.

I really appreciate your opinions.

This is my current 1911

I would like something similar but parkerized and more oriented as a duty gun.

No reliability issues here, and I haven't heard of any.

SA will fix any that come up though, with their Lifetime Warranty.

Reliability issues out of the box is a myth.

I'm sure that at one time or another just about EVERY gun manufacturer has had an initial failure problem of some sort.

I've got a bottom-of-the-line- SA 1911A1 and I've not had a SINGLE problem with it yet (got it 3 years ago) and I'd be hard pressed to spend more money on something that's only SLIGHTLY more accurate.

(I don't shoot competition)

I also have a ww2 GI in the 550+ rounds I have put through her I've not had a single hiccup.   Both of my SAs are 100% reliable.    I really dont think you can go wrong.   Even if you did have a problem 1911s are very easy to diagnose and get running, also like it was said they actually do honor their warranties.

Want to know what I bought on my 21st birthday?  A Springfield Armory 1911.  That was back in 1989 and I still have the gun.

Now, on to your question.  I personally can't stand firing pin safeties so that really limits me.  It rules out the S&W and the Kimber.  I don't know about the Smith, but you can remove the thing from the Kimber.  Your comment about the high grip though will still rule out the Kimber.  Look at the tang on it compared to the Springfield.  You'll note that the rear is wider and lower and if you have a "high thumb hold", you may find that it forces your hand to shift.  Its very uncomfortable in my hand, but if you don't ride the safety, this probably isn't an issue.

In short... for the money, I don't think you can go wrong with the SA.

Yeah I ruled out the kimbers because of the grip safeties.

Personally I like a fitted ed brown grip safety myself.

I'm pretty happy with my Loaded SA so far.  I only wish it had a checkered front strap.

But it's attached to a gun that is too much $$  Hell, i'm still trying to get money for my first AR.  I've gathered the money 4 times and I've had to spend it on other things 4 times

Negative, you can buy the ed brown safety and attatch it to a danged milspec if you like.   Hell that would be my preference.   I'd buy a milspec fit a good set of sights, a bar sto barrel, beavertail and videki trigger.   You'd be in for the same money, maybe not as flashy but a better setup.

For 600 or 700 dollars you are looking at the Springfield/Dan Wesson range.

I want to get something that I'll be happy with out of the box.  As much fun as I had smithing on my gold cup, I don't want to have to pay a smith to make the cuts for the sights and have the gun refinished.
