I had a chance to shoot a Ruger LC9 yesterday and wanted to share my impression if anyone is considering one of these.

  • The trigger is crap. No two ways about it. Probably one of the worst modern pistol triggers I have ever felt.
It jumps around in the hand quite a bit. I guess this is to be expected with a 9 this small but I think the shootability  you lose isn't with the carryability  you gain.
It is hard to shoot well
The loaded chamber indicator is an abomination. Glock figured out how to do it with the extractor yet Ruger uses a giant red lever in the top of the slide. Crap to break. Space for shit to collect. And I never trust them anyway
The mag disconnect is communist lawyer crap.
The external safety is small, had to hit quickly and just looking to kill the user when they need the gun. The 57lb trigger should be safety enough. I am all for training to use your guns until clicking off the safety is second nature but extra safeties on a gun that sucks to practice with don't make sense.

I can't say enough bad things about this gun but I will at least say it ran 100%

To each his own. The Ruger is a good gun for what is was designed to do. I have a LC9 and LCP. I find them both easy to shoot and shoot well. If you are able to shoot a revolver well, then you should be able to shoot the LC9. I have more expensive guns, but they are not necessarily better.

Got spare mags to sell then?  :-)

I love my LC9, it exactly fills the need I purchased it for, except for one little thing...  I need more mags for it...  :-)

Allow me to retort.
The trigger is typical of the sub-$400 pocket pistol genre.  Long and heavy, but better than both Kel-tecs I once owned.

Thumb safety is easier to disengage than engage due to the way it pivots.  I plan to address that by not using it.

The LCI is obnoxious but as long as it doesn't interfere with the sight picture I don't care.  It does have a recoil that means you really need to hang onto it, which is harder without the pinky hook, but at least it isn't painful.

Mag safety doesn't bother me.  In normal operation it is unobtrusive.

A cheap and easy way to carry 8 rounds of 9mm in your pocket.

Your findings confirm mine, however you seem to like it much better than I did.

It isn't my gun or I would sell

I had an LC9 it was not for me I could not hold it in my hands because it was to small I got a Walther PPS that fits me and has a trigger a lot like the Glock & M&P.  The pistol is a good pistol just not designed for me but it never gave me an issue and ate everything I fed it.  My fiancés dad has it now and he loves it.

I had an LC9 for about a month, until I took it out and fired it...   I absolutely hated it...

I sold it and bought a S&W Shield!

Ruger needs to do the re-vamping that they did to the LCP to the LC9 with the slightly shortened non-stacking trigger. Much like a Kahr.

My wife carries the LC9. It is what it is and goes boom every time. She likes it and can hit with it, so I'm good with that.

I like mine. It serves the purpose of being small, but more power than a .380.
The safety and indicator? I ignore those since I don't used them so they don't bother me.
Is it perfect? Obviously not, but it works.

I like mine.

I deleted the mag safety. Takes about 10 minutes.

While I thank you for posting this, I think you missed the philosophy of use for this gun.

This isn't a range gun.  It's not intended to be pleasant to shoot, accurate, or refined.
This isn't a combat gun.  It's not intended to be a high capacity rapid engagement pistol.

This is a personal defense gun.  It is intended to go into your pocket.  It is intended to be as light weight, simple to use, and reliable as possible.  It is intended for extreme close quarters engagement with one, maybe 2 assailants.  It is not intended for reloads and multiple engagements.  It is the wrong choice if that is your expected encounter.  It is not intended to be carefully aimed for that perfect distance shot.

It is intended to go into your pocket and not go off without you consciously making sure it goes off - very consciously.  And only hit something 5 yards away.  Hence, the crappy trigger.  It's not going off in a pocket or purse.  The loaded chamber indicator should never be used - ever.  That gun should always be either unloaded and locked-open in your safe, or loaded.  My CCW pistol is never empty.  Even at home.

I would not use the external safety ever.  This gun should not even have one - I'll agree there.

Pocket gun. In the sub $400 range.

Heavy trigger so you don't shoot your balls off.

We've got a whole generation of striker fired shooters now.

I actually wanted a Kel Tech but the LC9 was all they had at the time.   I couldn't shop around because I won another gun with a $20 raffle ticket, so I had to stick with that one store

I agree on the trigger but mine has ran 100% since I got it.

My wife has an LC9.  I put a CT laser on it for her.  She loves it, and is very accurate with it.  I can't hit with it at all and I agree about the trigger, mag dc, lci, and thumb safety.  But, it runs 100% and it isn't my gun.  She never uses the thumb safety anyway.

LCP, LC9, they are basically, "get the fuck off me" guns.  Not for range shooting at 25 or 50 yards for 4 or 5 hours.  They are small pocket guns.  Rugers work and work and work and I carry them myself.  If somebody is 10 feet from you threatening your life and this thing is in your pocket vs nothing you have an advantage, and that's what they are for.  They aren't made for pleasure shooting, but they work well being Rugers.

Go get a CZ100 and report back.  The LC9 trigger is long but smooth.
