Ok I am looking for what will be my primary CCW and all around go to handgun. I think I have narrowed the field down to the G19 or the P239 in 9mm. From what I have read and herd they are both top notch handguns. I realize the best way to find out what I like best is to shoot and handle both. Unfortunately there are no ranges that rent guns around here and I don’t know any one who owns even one of these guns. As far as I can determine the Glock has more going for it: Lighter weight Higher Capacity Better parts availability Cheaper However the Sig has: A better grip angle and size A true D/A - S/A trigger system I am torn. I own a Sig P228 and love its feel but I find it to big and heavy for a CCW. So I figure its little brother the P239 would fit the bill. But the P239 is really not all that much smaller or lighter. Then I here about all these people who love there G19 and swear it is the best CCW ever made. Yet it has that goofy grip and weird trigger. Could I get comfortable with them? True to AR15 form I would buy them both but at this time I don’t have the money. So what am I to do? G19 or P239? Thanks. |
All I can tell you is that my P239 .40 is my favorite CCW because it is so comfortable to wear, is dead reliable, and very easy to conceal. I wear it IWB, right rear hip. It is very thin and slim, unlike my XD which is very Glock-like and blocky, the P239 just blends in, whether jeans and a T-shirt, or jacket and tie. You should try wearing the P239 before you write it off, it is more comfortable to wear, and easier the conceal than the P228, as much as I like the P228. It's just not as thick. I keep buying other pistols to rotate in for CCW, but the P239 still get carried more than anything else. P239 is my vote. |
I had a Kahr MK9 I bought for primary CCW, the stainless slide cracked on it after 100 rounds of +p. Looking at where the fracture occured, it was evident that the slide was built very lightly and couldn't handle the shock as it cracked where the steel was thin, and the fracture comminuted quickly to the point where I'm lucky I didn't get it in my forehead.... I just don't trust Kahr products to handle hot loads after that. As a matter of fact the Sig P239 was the pistol I got on store credit when I turned the Kahr back into the dealer. As a CCW, I depend on a weapon to safeguard my life and my family's lives, so it must be ultimately reliable. The Sig P239 is built strong, overengineered really, yet still compact. I lost all faith in Kahr products after that happened. The Sig fit the bill. Just my experience. |

That would be a tough decision for me. I have shot a P239 and didn't much care for it. The SIG triggers are too heavy and the sights are not my preferred 3-dot pattern. The P239 felt top heavy and too small for my hand. However it was accurate and reliable and would be more comfortable in an IWB holster than the G19. The G19 is one of the better Glocks due to its size and recoil characteristics. It is a bit chunky to wear inside the pants though. |
The P239 is heavy, for it's size, you are right. |

Ya I would get bolth but I cant right now. So which first? I have been thinking about the weight: The P239 is like 25oz unloded The G19 is like 21oz unloded Now slap there respective mags in and see which one weighs more. 15rd Glock or 8/10rd Sig? The Glock must weigh more. Poor argument I know but weight is a big factor. Hu...

SIGs normally are a little top heavy. It seemed worse to me with the P239. The biggest thing I didnt like was the absolutely square front strap on the grip. When they first came out I thought Id want one...until I held it. It may not be the same for you, but in my opinion the G19 is much better gun. |
| Best bet is to find a range that rents both and shoot them. You won't really know what's right for you until you try them out. If you were in DFW I'd let you shoot mine, you might check your hometown forum and see if there is anyone who is going to the range soon that has one or the other. They are common handguns and most shooters are happy to let others try their weapons, if you ask nicely and offer to pay for the ammo you shoot. |
| Ya I know _DR that is very true. I will try to hold off on buying one or the other untill I can at the very least hold them bolth. Darn. I guess we are back to were we started. Bolth are exellent guns. Bolth have pros and cons. I just need to find out which one is right for me. No one will know better than myself. However your input is helpfull. |
Honestly, if you can, try a waistband carry, or however you plan to carry it, with both also. Holding it to get an idea of the grip is only half of it, you will be wearing it the rest of the time. You need to know what it's going to feel like while concealed, since it will be a CCW. Some guns are quite literally a pain in the side. |
