| With the popularity of weapon mounted lights I was wondering.Considering you never point a weapon at anything you don't want to shoot,is this really a safe thing?I mean considering the gun is pointed where the lights pointed be it friend or foe.Sorry if it's a dumb question but I was just curious. |

It's not a dumb question. Take a flashlight, and point your finger in a straight line parallel with the body. You'll notice that you can illuminate things without pointing your finger at them. Same will go for a weapon mounted light. All home defense guns should have mounted lights. At 4 am when you are possibly going to be shooting at multiple home invaders, you won't want to be shooting your weapon one-handed because you're holding a flashlight with your other hand. Also, if you are shot in your strong or weak hand, your weapon mounted light will still be working. YMMV ETA: Also, as long as you abide by "finger off the trigger until you are ready to fire", you can even muzzle friendlies without placing them in danger. In a dynamic situation, gun safety rules are often suggestions rather than hard fast rules. Most SWAT team members and cops and soldiers get muzzled by friendlies all the time. I know I do. |

Here is a link to a "how to" article found in the Lights and Lasers section under the AR15 tab.
In short, it is recommended that the "splash" of a weapon mounted light be used to search. That way the firearm can be pointed in a safe direction (usually the ground) until a threat is identified. |
