Had some issues with a 10mm polymer Witness yesterday. I bought the heavier spring set from Wolff because everybody said the factory springs were too light and using full power 10mm all the time with them would increase the risk of the slide cracking. I had fired the pistol before with factory springs and had no problems but with the heavier spring, the slide was outrunning the next cartridge and would occasionally fail to feed. This problem didn't seem to occur with my other magazine but I didn't have enough ammo to be sure. Ammunition was cheap ball so I may just have to switch springs out depending whether I want to shoot lighter or heavier loads but I really hope there is another solution. Wolff has extra power magazine springs but not for 10mm.
The other issue was that POI was very low. About a foot low at twenty yards. This was with both the American Eagle 180 grain ball and Buffalo Bore 180 gr JHP. POI was a couple inches low with the lighter springs. I could just go back to the factory springs but then I'd be worried about cracking the slide. Hell, maybe I should just accelerate the process so I can go ahead and get a free match slide. |

Free match slide is the way to go (been there with a 10mm Wonder Finish), but I don't know if they do that on the Polymer frames. FWIW the cracking slides really is a machining and design issue, more than an ammo one and effected the .45 ACP guns as well. Too heavy of a recoil spring supposedly can crack slides as well, by slamming them too hard forward. |

Quoted: So do you think the extra power spring was unnecessary? Yup-ish. Notice in your post, you replaced the springs because of the effects of "full power 10mm all the time", but when you tested it, shot cheap ball. I'd spring it to what you're using all the time. Most FMJ cheap 10mm is "FBI lite" loadings, a little hotter than .40 S&W. I got a Wolff 20# spring after wearing out the factory 18# (left the factory hammer spring in). Works pretty good, although I think my extractor spring is going out as well. Only reason I got the little heavier spring, is I shop around and buy up and shoot older 10mm ammo, so it's a little hotter. If you're shooting practice ammo, use the factory spring if it works. If you get your hands on some hot stuff slap the heavier spring in. |
