I've got a couple of questions for the guys who really know their mags. Specifically, SIG 229 (.40/.357) and Beretta 92F. This probably applies to others as well, which is why I'm posting this thread here instead of in the Mag Forum. I ordered some hi-cap mags for my Sig 229 .40/.357 and my Beretta 92F. I specifically checked with the (unnamed) salesperson on the phone to make sure these were "factory" mags. I told him I wanted genuine OEM mags and didn't want any aftermarket stuff. Well, the mags came in, and they look different from what I expected. My original Sig mags are a nice black color, have the Sig logo on them, and are stamped "Made in Germany". The ones that just came in are a dark grey color, have the Sig logo, but are stamped "Made in Italy", and have a restricted stamp. The bag they came in was a plastic zip-lock, which I took to mean they were probably broken out of a bulk order. The labelling on the bag was a white sticker with a bar code, plus the description "MAG SIG P229 357/40 12RD BL LE", plus a code on the bottom which reads "MGSG22940LE". I'm thinking these are MecGar mags, but I'd like somebody to verify my suspicions. If they ARE MecGars, they are not "factory" mags, OR ARE THEY? I've been told MecGar is subcontracted by many of the manufacturers to produce their "factory" mags. I've also read that MecGar mags are not of the same quality as (in the case of Sig) the German-marked mags. I have read reports on the boards here that the MecGars may be inferior in some respects (different feed lip lengths, reliability, durability, etc.), but you never know what to believe. So my questions are: Are these OEM factory mags? If so, is MecGar quality up to snuff? I'd like to get some info here before I make a scene about aftermarket mags with my supplier. It would be nice if I knew what I was talking about before I go off half cocked. The Beretta mags I also suspect are MecGars. Same packaging type and the label reads "MAG BERETTA 92FS/STORM 9MM 15RD BLUE 104", with a "MGBR92HCB" code at the bottom of the label. The "MG" at the beginning almost certainly stands for MecGar. The mags themselves are stamped "Made in Italy" (MecGar is also in Italy, I believe). If anyone has any first hand knowledge, I'd sure appreciate hearing the facts. It could be that these mags are perfectly fine. However, I paid "factory" prices and want to make sure I got "factory" mags. I have a standing "no aftermarket mag" policy. Thanks for whatever info you guys can give. |

I know that MecGar makes the factory mags for Walter and some S&W, so it is possible that they also make mags for Sig and Beretta. I know that MecGar mags are highly regarded, and I would not hesistate to buy them. If they start producing mags for the SW99 in their name that are cheaper than factory mags I will definitly buy some. Brian |

I was flipping through the CDNN catalouge that came in the mail yesterday. You can get factory Sig mags, and I know Beretta was listed under the MecGar section. You'll find the former but not the latter on the website, so better to just give them a call to see what's currently in stock. 800.588.9500 MecGar mags are to be trusted in my experience and opinion. Edit to add: For reference when calling, MecGar on p.61. 15 round Beretta 92 mags are listed, blued, $20. 17 rounders listed for it as well, $22. Sig factory Hi-caps on p.55. 12round 229 40/357 $30 new, $20 used. |
