XD 45 Tactical with TLR-1 attached. Its not on the nightstand but in a quick access electronic safe attached to the bed. http://desmond.imageshack.us/Himg831/scaled.php?server=831&filename=xdtac.jpg&res=medium I had the exact same setup for several years; the XD was replaced with a M&P .45. |

Curious, why the bedside gun switch? Several reasons, none all that dramatic. I sold my XDs in favor of M&Ps because I shoot better with them. I picked up the M&P pretty cheap and it already had night sights, where the XD45 didn't and I didn't feel like putting more money into it. After a few years of nightstand duty and the occasional range trip, I noticed that the XD45 mags were starting to deform at the rear of the feed lips (though they still ran OK). |

Curious, why the bedside gun switch? Probably the same reasons as most people: the XD feels fat, it has poor balance, it handles recoil poorly in comparison to similarly weighted pistols, it has an unnecessary grip safety, it's magazines are easily deformed and the springs wear quickly, it offers absolutely nothing (except the unnecessary grip safety) over the competing Glock, M&P, Sig (SigPro) and H&K models (and maybe even Ruger), and it used to be priced several hundred dollars cheaper before Springfield bought importation rights and thus no longer represents a good deal. Well, those are the reasons I sold my XD, anyway. Primarily the first three. But hey, I'm sure there are some people out there who love them more than their firstborn. The M&P is a fine pistol and I wouldn't see any reason to question the logic of switching from an XD to and M&P. |

unnecessary grip safety
Just to be clear, the XD is a SA pistol meaning the trigger only releases the striker unlike a Glock that continues the reward movement of the striker during the pull before being released. The grip safety blocks the sear from moving downward and releasing the striker. To eliminate the grip safety is like eliminating the thumb safety on a 1911 with the hammer cocked back. |

By the time the XD began to come onto the scene ('02, '03), they were looking like a good alternative to Glocks. So I sold most of my Glocks and used the XDs for a few years. I'd already been down the USP road, having sold my last one about 1999, and the HK45 / P30 weren't out yet. |

i'd heard of those but never saw one.... a land line phone |

i use a TLR-3 on my XDm 9 fullsize with extra mag beside it....i do have a suggestion for those who use a weapon light attached to your pistols...i removed my lock lug on my TLR-3 so that i could quickly remove the light from my pistol at any time ..with out fiddling with any levers or thumb screws. with my light just just finger tight holds it inplace quite well for 2 mags..by the end of the 3rd mag it starts walking foward. the reasons for quick removal are many...and greatly out weigh a locked light. something to ponder. |

OK, the grip safety isn't unnecessary. The WHOLE DESIGN CONCEPT that led to requiring a grip safety is unnecessary. Apparently it is possible to make a plastic pistol without one. Why in the hell was it necessary for them to design it that way at all? Why not just put a thumb safety and go the Glock route? Someone might actually be able to make some money off of that idea... oh, wait, the M&P exists, huh? |
