I am about to purchase my first handgun in about a week or so. I have narrowed it down to the Springfield XD .40 or the Glock 22 .40. I'm looking for a gun that is easy to shoot (because I'm new at this) and basically hits whatever I'm pointing it at. I'm not worried about cost or carrying it because I need to learn how to use it first. Any Thoughts?

Ya, they're both good. XD has a grip safety. With the glock there is no grip safety, just stay away from the gen4's, they're working out reliability problems. Most of the problems seem to be with their 9mm. Try not to get blown up.

You're good to go either way.

My only thought really is why the M&P isn't in the mix.. Im biased as I own 3, but it was my first handgun purchase and I havn't been happier.  If you go the glock route I would avoid the gen 4, as of now... still workin out the kinks in those from what I keep reading..

Go back to the store.. pick up the M&P, and tell me you still want the latter two..

I've owned an xd40 service and still have a glock 23. They are both accurate, reliable pistols and will shoot as well as you make them. I still have the glock if that tells you anything. Try and rent both and see which shoots better for you. Some people prefer the grip angle of the XD as it's more traditional. The glock grip never bothered me, and I found I could get multiple shots on target quicker with the glock. Try both, and don't forget the M+P.

I would also recommend checking out the MnP.

If you're new to pistols, the grip angle of the Glock may not bother you.  If that's the case, you can't go wrong with the Glock.

Lots of XD users will tell you they have had no problems; on a department-sized large sample, however, there are frequently reports of a higher rate of failure with the XD than with your other possibilities.  Please do your homework on that, don't trust anyone like me on the internet.

It's you typical "Ford vs Chevy" arguement. They both feel and handle differently. Both good weapons, put them in your hands and let them decide.

Care to share these reports? Honestly i have no Bias to the XD. if you can provide them for me i will change platforms in a heartbeat. I have chosen The XD for personal reasons that i wont go into in this thread, but i would love to have my mind changed.

OP, you cant go wrong with any of the three major pistols talked about in this thread. go and SHOOT them all. Then decide.

All things being equal if it was my first handgun purchase i would go with the Glock.

I have a gen4 model 23 that has been flawless.  There seems to be more hype around this than what it deserves, though there have been isolated problems with the new 9mm's.  I say you can't go wrong with any of the above mentioned pistols.  Shoot them all and pick the one you are most comfortable with.

If you are looking for a Glock in .40, I would certainly recommend getting the Gen 4 over the Gen 3.  The Gen 3's work as they are supposed to, as long as you don't attach a weapon light.  My Gen 3 22 didn't work with a Surefire X300 but my Gen 3 23 did, so its a crap shoot.  The Gen 4 .40's have been working out of the box with and without weapon lights and are GTG.  They are still working on the 9mm's.

I have shot both side by side, and I choose the Glock.  The XD (service model) had significantly more muzzle rise and wasn't nearly as pleasant to shoot.

I have had 2 M&P .40's as well and they had the least muzzle rise of any .40 I have ever shot.  I would recommend them over the XD as well.  I just keep coming back to Glock....

All in all, I think going with the glock would be the wiser choice.

Years ago I had a XD40. It was a fine wepon. I just got my 1st Glock and REALLY like it. It's a Ford Chevy thing like mentioned above. They are both fine. I would hold/shoot them both first and make up your mind based on how they feel.
Don't count out the M&P. Anyone of the 3 are fine.

The Glock 22 is harder to shoot accurratly. The glock trigger is hard to get used to.

To me the XD has more recoil.

Shoot both, check out the M&P as well. I was largely recommended the glock by people here for my first handgun but after going to the range and shooting both a glock and an xd, I found the grip angle of the xd was better FOR ME. Choose what you're comfortable with.

I'd also like to add that neither gun gave me any problems when I shot them.
