Ok guys, I'm starting to shop for some replacement sights for my 1911. Probably gonna get Novak or 10-8.

But I'm on the fence about night sights. I know that they last like 10-12 years or so, but once they stop glowing can you replace just the inserts?

Or are you just stuck replacing them at that point.

I guess it's a sign of getting old when 10-12 years doesn't seem that long.

If the inserts cannot be replaced I may go old school and get a gold dot insert on the front sight.   thanks guys,   BD

If you get Trijicons, they can re-lamp them for you for a price...usually about half what a new pair costs...I have some Trijicon night sights on a 1994 SiG P220 that still glow...not as bright as new but I can still see them...and I can pick up the front sight during the day without the glow...almost 17 years...

Yes they can be relamped. I have 2 Trijicon night set sets, both on Glocks. One was installed in 1990 (21 years)   and the other in 1992 (19 years) that still work. Both are easy to pick up and I will be sending them back shortly if I don't just replace outright. My new ones though are noticeably brighter.

They don't last 10 or 12 years.  The tritium in them has a half life of about 12 years.  That means that in 12 years, they will be half as bright as they were when new.  And in another 12 years, they will be half as bright as that half brightness.

My oldest Tritium sights are on my 1997 G27, and they still glow just fine.  They are a bit dimmer, but I would hardly call them useless.
