My stepson, 28, lives out of state, and when I learned he was coming here for Christmas, I hatched a plan to swap him out of his low-rent PA-63 for one of my mid-rent .40 S&W's.

Always like a new project anyway.

Got it Friday, took it to the range yesterday.

Just like everyone predicted:

Shot accurately

Functioned perfectly

Double action was nearly impossible due to the hammer spring, etc

Beat the ever-lovin' crap out of the web of my hand

Changed the recoil spring to a Wolff 19lb

And last night changed the trigger spring to whatever Wolff sent (no strength noted)

I've ordered the Wolff hammer spring pack, but couldn't wait till it got here.

Removed first one coil, then a second coil off the factory hammer spring.

Seemed to work within reason, but don't yet know about light strikes.

If I've screwed up (won't be the first time), I have the new Wolff pack on the way.

Ordered a set of flat-panel grips from Numrich.  That's supposed to help with recoil (and slip on rubber fits them).

Might end up being my low-rent car gun if I can find some Hornady HP's.

Any one have a handful of them for sale?  Don't need but about a dozen.

Thanks for the report, is the PA 63 the 380 ACP model as I thought they also made the same pistol in 9 X18 Markov?  Looks like the pistol is in good shape, let us know how the wolff springs work out.

Hey! I've got one of those too, cept it's a PMK-380. Tough gun, real tough.  PA-63's always looked better with the 2-tone. Let us know about how the new grips do.

I've had one for a couple years now. Shares ammo with my Makarov. I don't really shoot it much. I changed all the springs in mine too. It makes a big difference. I also took a dremil to the feed ramp because it didn't feed hollowpoints very well.

Test fired it today with two coils cut from the hammer spring.

MUCH better double action pull and no light strikes.

I'll still try the Wolff springs for comparison.

Single action is right around 6lbs.

All that's available now in HP seems to be the Silver Bear 94 grn JHP and the Hornady 95 grn JHP.

Don't know for a fact, but the internets are saying "no larger than 95 grn" in the alloy frame PA-63's.

Found a holster today: Don Hume JIL Slide No. 59.  Rides high, fits nice and tight.

You are really better off with ball ammo in a 9X18 pistol.

No hollow points in that caliber have sufficient penetration.

Nice looking pistol, BTW.

I always thought those looked cool.  The various eastern european compact guns that use 9x18 always seem to fit me well and have pretty good triggers for da/sa rigs.

I CCW'd one for a couple of years and I liked it, still like it now too. It was light and the alloy frame wouldn't rust when it got sweaty. Heck, if i got rid of my P11 I would probably go back to it. IIRC the brown bear hollowpoints functioned well and were one of the stronger rounds available.
Down sides? the DA trigger pull was heavy and it kicked pretty good. Since I figured on carrying it a lot more than shooting that was no problem for me. I also carried with a round in the chamber, hammer down and the safety off (yeah I know but that is how I did/still do carry and nothing anyone can say will make me change so please save your typing fingers the wear and tear) so the heavy DA pull was (in my opinion) a good thing.
Overall I consider it a very good CCW candidate as long as the carrier can handle the sharp recoil.

Hornady HP's are scarce as hen's teeth right now, and expensive if you can find any.

Scored some in 9x18 Makarov along with an extra mag for the car heater.

Cheap as in price wise I'll agree with. PA-63's and the PMK-380's are some tough buggers and I would be hard pressed to agree on cheap quality.
Also, what did you wrap around the grips with? Looks effective and has sparked interest in wrapping the grips on mine as well.

Skip the Hornady hollow points. They only penetrate about 8" in gel.

My superior accuracy skills insure I only shoot up the nostrils, so I'm confident with the Hornadys.
