Thinking of getting a Springfield XDm 9mm.  If you have one let me know what you think of it?? Thanks!

I have the stainless over OD and absolutely love it. I added the Powder River OT stop and Dawson adjustable rear and .100 f.o. front sights. Very easy gun to shoot. Recoil is almost non-existant. Over 500 rounds and nos malfs of any kind so far. Much better in my hands than the glock.

I have one XD 9mm and two XD45s. Like them a lot. My glock has a better trigger but my XDs have a better grip. The XDm appears to have the "best of both worlds" with an improved trigger and a great grip. Consider that if you can afford it.

Fixed.

Only thing I don't like is how flat the beavertail is.  But that can be fixed with a bit of 800 grit sandpaper.

I can only comment on ergo's.

this is important!

I just bought the XD9 and I love it!  Super value gun, very 1911'ish, many pluses, good shooter, easy takedown, soft shooting.  Only negative is the trigger, but after about 1K rounds, it will smooth and soften up.
Cabela's now has a Visa discount so if you can, take advantage of this!!  its $100 off of $500.  Nice saving.
buy it

ETA: the XDM does have a better trigger.

I think its a lousy overpriced design that has an unnecessarily high bore axis, a shitty grip safety, a crap finish and a trigger reset that would make a DAO pistol blush.

Its striker fired, yet it has virtually none of the benefits of a striker fired design, and its costs too much.

Compare it to other firearms on the market in its price range, there are better options.  Compare it to pistols in the lower price range, there are better options.

The Glock and M&P are far better options.

I love mine. I think the trigger is more smooth than my glock. It's very comfortable to hold.

It's also never had a malfunction

That response was really mean spirited and downright truthful.

And hater that you are; you also intentionally neglected to mention that wonderful "M Factor" that Springfield throws in, free of charge, with every XDM they sell.

Fixed it for you.

What the XDM offers that no other pistol known to man can match, and which makes "all those Glock freaks" cry,  is that incredible M factor, not the X factor.

It's the M factor which  is incredibly important to consider when evaluating a pistol; that ridiculous X factor, Springfield marketing marketing gimmick that it is; not so much.

Those who have already decided in advance that the M factor is the principle requirement for their next pistol purchase, are pretty much limited to the XDM because so far as I know;  the Springfield XDM is the only pistol yet to offer the M factor.

Individuals who are willing to place other considerations before the M factor;  have a number of fine pistols to choose from.

XDM with a shorter barrel.

XDM with a 3.8" barrel ?

What a worthless gun.

Springfield had the Croatians leave the grip length  the same, but shortened the barrel from 4.5" to 3.8" .

For concealed carry, the problem is with the grips being too long, not the length of the barrel.

But on the other hand, you do get the advantages of lower bullet velocity coupled with a shorter sight radius for decreased accuracy and extra muzzle flash for nighttime shooting.

Ah yes, that dumpster. I see what they meant, in a way. Slightly lighter weight, much like a Commander 1911, I would think. I would imagine that people wearing a shoulder holster would also appreciate the reduction in bbl. I actually know quite a few people the use a shoulder holster in the winter.

Its sad that we cannot have an intelligent discussion without the glock fanboys pissing all over a XD thread.

OP I personally love my XD9, and cannot wait until I can afford the XDm. I for one think the 3.8" with the fullsize grip is a good idea. Its basically the size of an XD.

I'm far from a Glock fanboy, but I can recognize a better pistol when compared to the XD..and yes, I have had extended range time with XD.

OP..choose what you like. IMO the XD is poorly thought out defensive pistol. Big, blocky, horrible ergos and a grip safety that is more of an after thought than part of the original design.

Do XD's work? Yes. The one I shot ran fine and was accurate for the 500 rounds I ran through it. But it felt like a 4x4 in my hand.

It would be my last choice for a defensive handgun, of all of the polymer ones offered from HK, Glock and the M&P.

My choice is the M&P. I got rid of my HK's and one Glock to get the ones I have now.

Exactly, it is just an opinion, hence why I put "IMO" ie "In My Opinion" at the start of that sentence.

Don't mistake honesty for fan-boyism.

Take a class where you have to learn the XD, then take a class with an M&P or a Glock.  I've got 20 bucks that says you ditch the XD once you see the inherent design advantages of the other two guns.

Again, the XD may work, but there are some very pointless and unnecessary design quirks present.

To be honest, thats what happens when you take a no-name croatian design, add 200 to the price, and call it the XD.  The XDM would have been far better had they actually took what they learned from the XD and made some design improvements.  Instead they change the barrel, the machining on the slide and give it a futuristic frame...and then add another 200 bucks to the price tag and give you the "M factor".

The 1911 has a slim grip with a fat grip safety.

The XD uber leet M factor has a fat grip with a thin safety.

Hits always counts.  Kind of reminds people that they are shot.    Reloads are always part of the regime as with malfunction drills, one handed operation, and downed shooting.

I like the standard XDm 9mm, but can't for the life of me see what the point of the 3.8" version is. It has a shorter barrel then the 4.5" version, but keeps the same grip length. Good luck carrying the massively long gripped gun as CCW. Oh, but it has 3.8" barrel now!

I think the 3.8" was supposed to put it at the same size as the original XD, not make it concealable. But if I had to choose a gun for CCW I would definitely try to see if I could conceal the 3.8"

I have two XD Service pistols and they are my go to guns. Never had a problem. I used one in 4-day pistol course and did well.

I sold my Glock because it felt like a 2x4 in my hand and I just could not get over having to force my wrist down. Yea – Yea, muscle memory. If I’m using my pistol for defense, I’m freaked out and don’t want ‘muscle memory’ to be one of the basis of success. The natural point of aim of the XD works for me…

I don’t like the Glock grip. I don’t like the M&P grip. If you do, fine …

I’m a mechanical engineer and don’t see anything about the pistol that looks substandard compared to the Glock I had. Most of the XD ‘failure’ stories are anecdotal in nature. Some I call BS. Using standard failure analysis methods, the probability of those purported failures is near zero. Show me a photo of a broken XD grip safety… Even if it did break, how did jam the slide?

I don’t care if no ‘major LEO agencies’ have adopted it or not. I have a brain...

I don’t give a crap about one-handed reloads. My pistol is for home defense. If I get shot in one arm and I'm empty, I have other problems…

I don’t give a crap if my splits are slightly slower due to a ‘high bore axis’. How much slower are we talking... 0.2 seconds?

The XD works fine for my application. Is it the best - no. If you have a problem with an XD, state your case once and please back off. Reading a back and forth pissing match gets old and won’t convince me otherwise.

Meh- by this line of reasoning we should discard Noveske and BCM as inferior. Not saying that the XDm is top of the line but there is way more hate in this thread that I expected. This is a perfectly fine pistol. I have never had a malf with mine and have had no problems racking the slide despite the accursed grip safety needing depressed. We all have our favorite guns and can talk about them but this thread is a pissing match.

I didn't even know you had to depress the grip safety to rack the slide....so I guess it hasn't been an issue for me. I don't have a 9mm but have the ported .40 and a XDm .45 and love them both. I traded in the tactical .45 for the M model and have been very impressed with it. I used my tactical to shoot 3 gun and it never failed me. So to the OP go for it you won't be disappointed.

That is probably my only complaint with the pistol.  It shoots good, is reliable, and is cheap IMO.  I am now training with a G34 and
don't shoot the XDm anymore.  I am still trying to find a full size 9mm that I LOVE.  The G34 is good, but I still want to run a M&P
and maybe a Sig X Five to see if I like them more than the G34.

Any other full size 9's I should try?

The fact that almost no law enforcement agency in the US has adopted the XD or XDM line of pistols says a lot.

Not really.  Those decisions usually aren't made by the trigger pullers.

With that said, I do think that M&Ps and Glocks are probably better weapons overall.  That doesn't mean the Springfield isn't a pretty good weapon.  My experience with an XD9 service model was good.  Craftsmanship seemed good overall.  My only concern durability-wise is that the mags seemed a bit on the flimsy side.  I never did get used to the trigger because the break was a but on the mushy side with a bit too much overtravel.  YMMV on that count.
