My dad wants a handgun cleaning kit for Christmas. He has several different calibers and both pistols and revolvers. I've pieced together the stuff I needed and never purchased a kit. I'm looking for something under $50.00.
What would you recommend? |

a good starter kit (with patches, solvent, oil, cleaning rods, etc.) should be good. then from there he can add and tweak his kit to his own liking. a typical pistol cleaning kit should cost no more than $20.
another option would be to assemble a custom kit for him based on your experience, but you can easily spend $50 going this route (or at leat i can |

I've looked at kits and think 90% of the stuff in them is stuff I'd never use.
I think having two (2) rods is important. One for the jag and one for the brush. That way, you don't have to constantly change back and forth. You can just clean full-tilt-boogie. I have a brass bristle brush and a nylon bristle brush (you know, the tooth brush kinda brushes). And, I keep a supply of Q-tips at hand. Cleaning patches, of course. I like good jags and nylon bore brushes. Neither of which come in "kits". For juice, I have 3 in 1 oil, Mobil 1 bearing grease, and a solvent (I like BoreTech). That's it. Get your own box, or make one, and assemble the components. |

After I posted this I thought about just buying a tackle or toolbox and assembling a kit for him, and since both of you suggested doing something similar I think that's the route I'm going to go. Thanks! That's what I was going to suggest; a custom made up kit in a nice tackle box should make a great gift. |

Thanks! Put some gunslick FBC, bore snakes for his calibers, some CLP and powder blaster and a bundle of shop rags in there and you'll be GTG. For a real nice setup, throw in a set of brass punches and a screwdriver set. He'll be able to do just about anything with that. |
| I completely agree with assembling your own kit. Since I have so many different calibers and clean my guns a particular way, I find it better to get my stuff in pieces. I also get the better cleaning supplies, which is another reason I agree with assembling your own––you can get the best supplies without wasting money on crap you'll never use. |
