I'm wanting to get a couple lanyards for my pistols for hiking and carrying on my ATV.  For a conventional lanyard (the plain rope style, not the coiled or retractable style), where does end of the lanyard opposite the pistol attach?  Do I loop it over my belt, or does it go around the shoulder somehow?  I thought it went around the belt, but I'm pretty sure I read about wearing over the shoulder the other day.

Old school lanyards went around the body.

(Belts were not common when they were in use)

Just attach/loop it around your belt.

in modern times I would suggest the belt or through a button hole on a shirt-in my .mil days (before thetelephone cord style and drop leg holsters were the norm) the plain braided lanyard I attached to one of the metal rings on my lbe suspenders
