I recently purchased a Sig 220 in .45. I like the feel of the 220 it seems to fit my hand very well. I am interrested in another Sig perhaps a compact in .40. Does Sig make a .40 compact with a grip about the same size as the Sig 220? Can that model also be converted to .357? |
There's the 229 in .40/.357 simple barrel swap but can be purchase new either caliber. The grip is a little different than a 220 though. There's a smaller .45 which is simply a cut down 220 its called a 245. www.sigarms.com |

You need to look at both the P229 and the P226. They both have double stack mags and as a result have a bit fatter grip than the P220. The P229 is a compact and has a shorter grip. The P226 is about the same size as the P220 and has a grip of about the same length (though it’s slightly more rounded in the heel). Both are superb handguns. I’ve read elsewhere that if you want a Sig that will handle both .40 S&W and .357 Sig, you should buy a .40 and convert it rather than buying a .357 and trying to convert it. Unfortunately, I completely forget the rational behind that statement – and I don’t know if it’s actually true or not. |

I'm pretty sure the rational for the .40 before .357 is the magazines. Something about .40 mags feeding .357 fine, but not the other way around. Also a .40 before 9mm, because you can get a Barsto 9mm barrel and then have a 3 caliber conversion. Not 100% sure though as I only shoot .45 outta a P220. |
I can vouch for the 239 in .357 Sig. Great gun. The only downside is the mag cost. CDNN has them for ~$30, though. I haven't tried them, but I believe they are new. |
