I posted this over on a handgun forum without much response. Hope someone here has some advice/tips.
I located 4 BHP's today One is mfg in 1981 - passing because of possible feeding issues I have read about. Some wear and some scratches, sloppy slide (compared to my 1911 - no other basis for comparison yet). 3 others I have not seen yet: 1986 blue w/adj sights, supposed trigger job, C&S trigger (no mention of hammer) calling it 98% - whatever that means, under $ 700 1993 with some c&s parts and " some work done" under $1000 1994 chrome also under $ 700 I will see them all by this weekend. What should I be looking for? All comments appreciated. |

Purely opinion and YMMV:
- I would not trust 'some work done' unless it's by a name gunsmith. - The lock up on a BHP is not going to feel as tight as a 1911. There is no bushing. - Going rate for an excellent condition gun is $650-$700 from what I've seen on equipment exchang, Gunsamerica, and Gunbroker - I just bought an unfired Mark III for $700 and consider that an OK deal - The chrome one sounds like an OK deal. These are reliable guns and will hold up well with the chrome finish. Kind of depends on how many rounds fired like any other gun. - You will likely want the trigger worked on especially if you're coming from a 1911. Other than that the guns should be good to go. |

My first choice would be the 81 vintage piece. You can ID a humped feedramp easy, and have it fixed easy. Like was pointed out, HPs don't hold a tight slide to frame fit like 1911s. The chrome piece might be OK, if you like chrome. |
