I've been having a hell of a time keeping my BHP barrel from developing rust.  I've been keeping it as dry as I can and in a low humidity environment, but for some reason everytime I run a dry swab through the barrel it comes out with a little bit of rust residue.  Very light residue, and the barrel is still smooth and shiny after I run the bore snake through it.  What gives? Is this normal? Could a water based lubricant cause this?

Also, while I've been using snap caps for function testing my Mark III after assembly, is it okay to dryfire?

What kind of snap caps do you use. Could the material you`re cleaning from the barrel simply be from them? I have seen brown aluminum snap caps. Maybe some of the finish is coming off? Also is your barrel original equipment or a replacement? Honestly, I`ve never had a problem with original Browning barrels.

What kind of lube or protectant are you using? Personally, I dont see a problem with using a water based cleaning solution. But your lube or protectant probably shouldn`t be (IMO). Try using Brake Free CLP or BullFrog rust hunter, and see if your rust problems resolve. They both come in baby type wipes that make cleaning and lubricating pretty convenient. HTH

I use plastic snapcaps, so it's not them.  And the barrel is a Browning original.  It is definately rust inside the barrel, but only at the muzzle, which leads me to believe I'm having humidity control problems.  I don't have a safe yet that I can fill with dessicant, so I'll have to move my pistols some place else and see how that works.

Find yourself some R.I.G. (Rust Inhibiting Grease) it is old time, but works like a charm for rust prevention in stored firearms here in the humidity capitol of America! A light coat should do the trick...it used to cost maybe $.65 for a small tube...probably $5.99 now, but it should still be available and it IS good stuff.

Aparently Silencio bought RIG out. Here is a link to their page...many dealers should still carry the product, I think...Midway does, I know.

I am not fond of Breakfree CLP as a lube or a cleaner, but it does one hell of a job at preventing rust. Try getting the barrel very clean and then squirting down the bore with Breakfree CLP. Use some clean swabs or patches to wipe off the excess. That should do a good job of rust prevention.

Excellent, thanks for the advice!
