I just recieved my paperwork, and am planning on buying my first handgun. I have shot plenty of pistols owned by my father and other people, but I just turned 18 and now I want my own. I have been debating between a 1911 or a BHP. I have expirience with the 1911 and I love everything about it, from the pop of the big .45 to the ergonomics and looks. BUT, I have had my eyes on a browning for awhile too. My question is...Does the BHP feel fat in your hand, like a baretta 92? All of the double stack pistols I have shot have felt too chubby and therefore uncomfortable. It will be awhile before I can handle one in person because I live in a small town where only one store carries handguns, and they have a limited selection. Any help or opinions would be greatly appreciated! thanks

great question ...My first handgun was and still is the BHP MK3 . in 9mm . no you wont in my opinion find a better feeling 9mm, for a first time user grab one . a 1911 style just isnt right for some people right outta the box . some people knock the BHP , but I love it , trigger pull could use some smoothing a bit . mags are cheap and you wont think it feels fat like a beretta .. either way you cant go wrong witha John M. Browning design .. even thought the HP wasnt done till years after his death ...

I'm in much the same position, out in the middle of nowhere, but had heard a lot about Hipowers and finally made it to a gun show and tried one in my hand, fit like a glove.  I have very small hands for my size, and have a hard time finding handguns that fit.  I have been shooting a Taurus PT92 for a while, the first time I took the Hipower out to the range my group sizes shrank enormously, which I attribute tot he better fit among other things.

If you want a "compromise" between the Hipower and the 1911, look at the Hipower in .40 S&W, which is what I ended up getting.  Pretty hefty cartridge, I'm shooting 180 grains at 950 fps, but the same basic layout in the handgun.  They strenthened the frame and did increase the width of the slide slightly, but the grip is pretty much the same as the 9mm.

I really love mine, I've put about 3000 rounds through it with no issues.

Good to hear guys! The 40 S&W sounds intresting, ill have to do some more investigating on that one! Ive been planning on getting a 1911 right away, but I want somthing really nice and im not sure its in the budget right now. The more I hear about the Hi-power the more I like it. Ive seen several adds for hi-powers for sale and for the time being it seems to be a  more economical choice for me, especially when you include ammo costs ( my dad already has reloading equipment for 9mm). Eventually I will own both, but for now the BHP looks like the way to go! Thanks for the replies, and if anyone else wants to share their opinions im all ears!
