Hi All,
Ok, I have a external extractor question. So the reason I'm asking is because I'm thinking of buying a S&W 1911. I know BHP forum, but I just wanted to ask this question here, because I never hear anyone complain about external extractors on BHP's and didn't want the 1911 purest type response that I might find in other forums. So, just trying to get some feed back from you guys on this subject before I cross a S&W 1911 off the list for the wrong reasons. My own personal experience with externals are limited to Beretta M9's in the military and a few other types like Sig's and H&K's. I haven't had really any problems with said M9's when I have used them, maybe have seen a few "Failur to extract" on some of the qual. ranges and fam. fire ranges, but overall these extractors seem's to work well. And these pistols are "Beat-up" military pistols. I do own a BHP, but it has a internal extractor, and my other 1911's well...internal. So again just looking for your external extractor experience / opinions. And I apologize for asking in wrong forum in advance.
ETA: Buying this 1911 for CCW pistol so, just have concerns about something not familiar with on a pistol. |

I think the internal / external extractor question is strangely overblown. I have two BHPs and a FEG Hungarian clone, and have never had a bit of problem with their extractors. I've also owned several third generation S&W handguns, which were terrific and dependable pistols. It isn't like S&W is just starting designing products with an external extractor - they have been practicing for 50 years now I bet with automatic pistols in a variety of calibers.
I would have no problem with their 1911 and its extractor arrangement - but prefer my BHPs. |

External extractors are found on all modern pistols nowadays and there is a reason... they are more reliable and durable. There are many who believe the next evolutionary step for the 1911 should be a reliable external extractor. It will decrease the amount of maintenance and fitting that a 1911 requires. All S&W 1911s use an external extractor. The older ones have a smaller EE which seems to work for several thousand rounds and then issues begin to pop up, YMMV. The NEW SW 1911 "E" series uses their performance center extractor, which is larger and more robust than the traditional SW 1911 extractor. They are a new product for 2011 and it seems like it is a big improvement. Smith & Wesson has been making semi-autos with external extractors for a long time, and they are good at it. I don't personally own an "E" series 1911 from S&W, but all of the research I've done on them is very promising.
The following link is a detailed review of an "E" series 1911 by Hilton Yam. He seems very favorable of the design despite some of the growing pains, which I'm sure S&W will address: 10-8 Performance: S&W E Series, Detailed Review |

Thanks Timbonez and everyone else for your feed back. I read the 10-8 blog on the "E" series and it really sounds like a winner of a pistol. I have been looking at the S&W 1911PD scandium commander model and the 1911PD full size. Really nice price range right now for me. Now if I can just take one for a test drive...... But thanks again all, really appreciate your help & info. And thanks for letting me muddy up the waters here in the BHP forum with a 1911 question. ATRAM6 |
