I was at Bass Pro Shop the other day and had a chance to look at a new CZ SP-01 Phantom. I was impressed with the way it felt in my hand. I am not for or against plastic pistols. But I will have to say that this is the first one that I have handled that felt good in my hands. I have handled the P07 duty and was dissapointed. The reason I am interested in the SP-01 is the full length dust cover, I could live with out the rails. I like the added weight out front. So my question is; how does the Phantom compare to the steel SP-01? I understand that polymer frames flex and absorb recoil. Does this make up for the lack of weight? How much of a difference in recoil/muzzle flip between the steel and polymer SP-01?

Polymer frames are not nearly as bad as their detractors would have you believe. I prefer them for carry, although I use nice heavy pistols for competition. A lighter gun will always have a little more recoil, but use of proper firing techniques will determine the accuracy of your fire far more than the weight of your pistol will.
I've seen some high speed videos of polymer frames flexing during firing, but there's no perceivable feel to that. I had been shooting them for years before I even knew they did that. My USPc .45 and the polymer glocks I've fired are perfectly functional, accurate, and fun to shoot. My CZ-40P has a very lightweight frame as well, and is one of my favorite and most accurate pistols to shoot. I wouldn't expect the phantom to be any different. |
| I do not have anything against polymer pistols. This is the first one I have found that really fills good in my hand. How a gun fills in my hand is top priority for me. I will be using this gun for home defense and compation. I understand that the steel frame SP-01 is to heavy for IDPA. |

I have a SP01, I have not shot a phantom, but what i've heard from those that have is that the recoil is negligibly different between the two. And recoil on the SP01 is very light to begin with. I prefer the grip feel on the steel framed gun myself, and I'd have to see a pretty abusive test of cz's polymer before I'd get one, but if you want to make idpa weight, or ccw, its easier to do it with a phantom.
ETA you can make weight with a SP01 if you use the thin aluminum grips. |

$450 is a good price. The only SP-01 I have seen in the East TN area was the Phantom at Bass Pro Shop for $600. I think I will pass for two reasons; the main reason is the decocker I can't stand them. Also I have a 97B I would like to trade and if I have to deal with Bass Pro or order from some one else I will get screwed.
I have emailed CZ-USA about my interest in a Phantom with a safety, but I did not get any response. Maybe that is one reason CZ is not so popular in this part of the country. ETA; At the last fun show I only saw three CZ's all 75B. |

That's also one of the reasons I went with a 75 Compact over a P-01. |

I've thought about getting a Phantom, but am happy with my SP01 and Shadow. One advantage to the decocker for competition is you get to start at half cock instead of hammer fully down. You can get a standard SP01 to IDPA weight pretty easily. I just had to change the grips to the plastic ones. FYI in my experience the aluminum grips will NOT make weight. I have two sets and they are both way to heavy. The plastic grips weigh .6 oz and the aluminum are 2 oz. The Marschal grips are .4 oz. With the 19 round mags I'm right at 39 oz. with the 10 rounders with plastic base I'm at 38.4. |
