I currently have one CZ, a 75BSAO 9mm that I've enjoyed for a couple of years. Other than adding some VZ frags it's completely stock. I thought about getting an SP-01(safety) and in my research learned about the SPO1 Shadow. Given, the upgraded sights, no FPB, safety levers that I prefer, better hammer, sear, 3mags, etc. It seems like a lot of upgrades for the money. Can any better informed members tell me if I should opt for any upgrades from CZ custom such as the old style trigger, longer Firing pin, solid trigger pin, etc. at the time of purchase?
Thx! |

I just got a 2014 sp01 shadow a few days ago. Absolutely worth every penny spent. The shadow has ruined me though, no gun will ever compare. Unless I get an accushadow or something. The trigger pull is so smooth and light. The reset is outstanding. You will not be disappointed in your purchase. Just be prepared to not shoot any of your other guns.
I personally like the old style trigger better. I thought it came with it, but it did not. So I would definitely opt for that. The 2014 shadow has an extended firing pin. |

I don't have an SP-01 Shadow, but I do have a CZ-75 Shadow. I love this pistol. I have shot it in Steel Challenge, USPSA, IDPA, and 3-gun. It's more comfortable to shoot than a Beretta, far more accurate than the Glocks I have shot, and has similar ergos to a 1911. I would not carry mine due to the lack of FPB. For that reason, I bought the matte Stainless 75B to have a similar beavertail frame but get the FPB.
The only thing I'd really get for certain is the longer firing pin. I had some light primer strikes with my Shadow - Angus sent me a longer firing pin and it's been 100% since then. Also, get Mec-Gar AFC mags. Buy the 17 rounders AND THEN buy the +2 extender baseplate separately. The mag body on the 17 and 19 are the same - however you cannot buy the non +2 extender baseplate. The AFC mags are the way to go if you're doing any sort of competition - I've heard of issues with the stock 18 rounders. The 17 rounders will fit in the USPSA and IDPA box, the 19's may or may not (mine didn't). |

On the other hand, I have encountered problems with the AFC, and no longer own any of those (while I have about a dozen SP-01 mags). The SP-01 mags can be said to be a superior design in that they (a) maintain the original contour as designed at the top of the mag and (b) use full-length tubes to get the extra rounds instead of a plastic extension. In fact, for a 9mm full size CZ, there is no mag I would use other than factory SP-01 mags for competition. (For my CO gun, which is a compact, I use factory 16-rounders with the SP-01 basepads.) |

What kind of mag issues have you had or heard of? Genuinely curious here. Quoted:

I apologize that our experience differs. What kind of mag issues have you had or heard of? Genuinely curious here. A few years ago the CZ's kind of took my club by storm. There were "CZ Squads" shooting in IDPA, USPSA, 3-gun, and Steel Challenge. About the only pistol that outnumbered the CZ's were the Glock 17's and 34's. The guys who ran the factory mags tended to get feeding issues at higher round counts through the mags. The thought was that the feedlips were spreading or wearing. The AFC shooters (I'm one of them) didn't have that issue. In fact, the only feeding issue I've had with an AFC in thousands of rounds of competition has been 2 occasions - both while slamming a mag home too hard. The AFC's tend to drop the slide on a forceful seat. If I hammer it too hard, the slide drops but the top round isn't picked up. So shoot to slide lock, bang a reload, bring the pistol up - click. I actually worked on less-forceful reloads for a few weeks after that happened. One thing I will say the 18 rounders are FANTASTIC for is chasing higher round count magazines. In my experience the AFC's don't work with Grams guts - the spring doesn't like the AFC geometry. However the Grams guts work with the 18 rounders. Using a 18round body, a Grams spring and follower, and (IIRC) a Beretta +2 extender (might have been a Pearce) I got to 21 reloadable in the mag for testing. Never competed with it, though. |
