I have a new CZ 75 SP-01 Shadow (DA/SA).  I have read that it is possible to damage or break gun parts through improper operation of the safety.

Could someone slowly walk me through this slowly.  You know, like you would for a 5 year old please?  :)

Thanks!

Hammer back, safety can be put on.

Hammer anywhere else (half cock or down), safety stays off.

I'm not sure it's an issue with a 'stock' shadow hammer.

Correct, for a stock pistol.

Tuned pistols can be fit to allow the safety to be activated when the hammer is not cocked, while still retaining its function. My Shadow can have the safety applied with the hammer fully down, while my TS can have the safety applied with the hammer on half-cock, but not all the way down. Both were tuned by CZC and have the competition hammer installed.

Forcing the safety on when the hammer is down and the gun hasn't been tuned to allow it could result in damage to the safety and/or sear.

Thanks for the replies.

My CZ is a SP-01 Shadow Custom.  I personnaly havent done anything to the firearm.

I could have sworn I read somewhere that a CZ 75 (forget which variant) owner was able to engage the safety when the gun shouldn't have allowed it, then attempted to fire and broke/damaged something.

So I was seeing if my firearm was susceptible to any of these shenanigans.  When I am casually firing at the range it wouldn't be a problem as I am very deliberate in my actions.  In a competition where I have stress and a ton of things going through my mind I didn't want something to happen because my happy safety thumb engaged the safety in an unconventional manner and then I broke something when attempting to fire.

Speculating here since my slides our out getting fitted, but if you somehow force the safety on a stock cz with the hammer down, and then fire you may break something as the safety locks the slide. I don't think this is something you can do easily on a stock gun.

The safety physically blocks the sear - if you can fire with the safety applied, something is already broken (or at least ill-fitted).

Just following up... your owners manual  covers this... The safety is designed to be used only at full cock. Some hammer swaps will allow it to be engaged at 1/2 or down, the shadow hammer is one of these. I did not receive supplemental information on my CZC tuned guns that differed from the printed manual.

If you engage the safety in half or decocked and pull the trigger you may damage the trigger mechanism.
