I saw a pair of these come into my local shop in preparation for an event this weekend. They look like pre-Bs, and they say "Retro" on the slide, but it's a bit hard to read because the polycoat finish is damn thick.
Googling around, I'm reading that they did a limited run of these several years ago. Are they at it again, or do you think these were just in a warehouse somewhere? |

I would love to have a true Pre-B for my CZ collection. If I remember right, those Retro ones have the round triggger guard, and that's about it for their retro-ness. I plan on dropping by that store first things Sat morning. I'll be on my way out to Higginsville for the USPSA match immediately afterwards....I'll have a black ballcap on with a BFL patch on it. Look forward to meeting ya! |

I have a Retro. Basically a B Model with a round trigger guard. CZ produced a few thousand of these around 04 for RSR Wholesale, I don't know if any other distributors sold them. Fit and finish is years ahead of my old Pre B's but being a B Model the trigger isn't near as nice. Nicest B Model ever made in my opinion because I really prefer the looks of the round trigger guard.

Wow, they put out a new batch, with the new style waffle grips. The original Retros had the anatomic (thumb-ridge) grips. Very nice B Model. Here's my Retro with my refinished Pre B. Both pistols sport reproduction waffle grips. More importantly, these have the short-rail style frame. These look like the anniversary models that were supposed to come out, only with a lot more contemporary bits - a standard B-profile slide, and contemporary-style safeties and slide stops instead of the original styles. And unfortunately, all of the "retros" are true 'B' models with FPBs; not like the originals or the current Shadows. SPOII, does yours have the half-cock notch? I'm guessing they probably do, but the true originals didn't, and IMO it's one of the factors that contributes to a much smoother DA. |

As mentioned the Retros are in reality B Models with the half notch and FPB. I used to have a 1985 vintage Pre B and that one also had the half cock. I believe this feature appeared in the early eighties. At first I didn't notice the short rail frame on these new Retros, it's a shame they didn't put a short rail style slide on them. It would be nice if a true retro with no FPB was offered, I love the old round trigger guard. I never felt a Pre B without the half notch, I didn't think you could improve the DA on most Pre B's. They're the one the of the best DA, if not the best DA, of any conventional double action pistol ever produced. I bought a preB the other day for $200 at a pawn shop. Now I am looking for original grips and some preB mags. It might be worth it to move to Texas just for the pawn shops. $200? And you don't need pre-B mags. Release the mainspring, remove the sear pack, and lift the trigger bar out as much as you can. Then just take a file and work down the rear face of the magwell until a Mec-Gar 17-rounder slides in and out. If you remove and flatten the magazine brake it also helps. |

Very little metal needs to be removed from Pre B's to use all modern B Model mags. The only bummer is the Pre B safety, there is a small spring and sheet metal plunger that gives a Pre B safety it's positive click. These parts are under pressure and can going flying and become lost. Much care needs to be taken not to loose them, a plastic bag to disassemble and reassemble can be used. CZ USA doesn't stock these parts but CZ Custom recently made one for a guy. Other than the safety the sear pack makes for an easy disassembly and a little file or dremmil work will give you mag options. A 200.00 Pre B CZ75 is a good buy, Pre B's have phenomenal DA triggers, decent SA triggers and a very positive safety. A world standard combat handgun. |

They're the one the of the best DA, if not the best DA, of any conventional double action pistol ever produced. I have a 1978-vintage short-rail. The DA is nearly as good as my slightly-slicked-up S&W 586 (probably about as smooth, but the 75's pull is heavier than the 586). The overall build quality is phenomenal for what is essential a combat pistol. |

Certainly a tad heavier but smooth. |

When I took mine apart I didn't realize they were there but they didn't go flying. The springs are stiff but they're nearly at full extension when they're pushing the detents into their slots, so there's not much springiness left when actually removing the safety shaft. Granted it's a very good idea to remove the detents and springs and bag them. They're also a bit of a pain to deal with hen reinstalling the safety shaft. I had to redo it a few times before I got the same postivie sensation as pre-disassembly. |
