I want to get a Thompson Contender pistol with the inter-changable barrels. I remember when I was a kiddo, my dad had one in .44mag and some other caliber.  I'd like to do the same with several different calibers.... 22-250, .44mag, .223, and a few more.

I've been looking on the auction sites to learn more, but I've seen differenciations between the "old contender" and the newer ones.  If I get a newer one, is it inter-changable with the older barrels or vice versa? Which Contenders are inter-changable with which barrels?  Just trying to learn about this system.

Thanks,

Chris

There are two generations of Contenders, the original referred to as Contender and the 2nd generation called a G2.  The barrels are interchangable between the Contender and the G2. I don't think the Contender and G2 grips are interchangable and there are a few feature difference between the Contender and the G2 frames (I think) but the main issue is the barrels are interhangable.   Another model produced by Thompson Center is Encore which is a heavier frame handling cartridges that the Contender and G2 handle plus heavier calibers.  The Contender/G2 barrels and the Encore barrels ARE NOT interchangable.
I have a Contender purchased around 1996, it has the "easy open" frame and the centerfire/rimfire selector is on the hammer.  I recently purchased two additional barrels that have no problems locking up in my frame.
