HI all, I have a K40, about 11 years old, that I purchased in Sept of last year. Perfect little pistol to tote around. I noticed the other day it is developing some rust spots on the top surface of the slide just behind the front sight. First what would have caused this there, and on stainless?(I know stainless is not rust PROOF, but I hae other stainless pistols just as old, or older that have not had this occur) Second, What would be the best way to go about getting it off of there without harming the finish too much?
Thanks. Edit: A little flitz and a cotton buffing wheel on the dremel got rid of the rust spots without issue. Now I think I'll flitz out the entire pistol. |

I am having the same problem with an MK9. Mainly using an IWB at 3 o'clock position. On high perspiration days I am getting the same rust. Slide right behind the rear sight. I have Tru-dot NS. Also, I was using a Hogue slip on and if I use it for a week or so the front strap on the grip will start to rust. I can get it off with metal polish and a dremel but who has time to do that every week. I'm afraid if I don't get it off the rust will pit the frame. So I stopped using the slip on. Thinking about getting the gun ceramic coated or something similar. I love the gun. Never had a misfire. Got my old CCW out the other day.(G19) It felt like a Desert Eagle in comparison. Hopefully someone will come along shortly with a good answer, or recommendation. Terry |

Had the exact same issue in the exact same place behind the front sight on my CW9. Seems like a theme. Mine was actually pitted to the point where polishing would not have taken it off. In all fairness, I do have sweaty hands and this is my first stainless slide gun, so. I have yet to carry mine and have only had it a few months. Only shot it 2-3 sessions. I had mine titanium DuraCoated. Looks factory, just a little more of a matte finish. Well worth the $60. Plus he polished the barrel and feed ramp at no extra charge. Will never have to worry about it again.

What do you use to clean/protect your pistol? I have used flitz to polish up all the internal workings, as well as the feed ramp and barrel hood. For normal cleaning I use Break Free on a bore snake, and wipe down the outside with a cloth. Been doing this on all my pistols, and this is the only one to show rust. Granted I live at the shore, with all the salt air exposure and humidity, but none of my other pistols, even the blued ones have had this happen. |

I used Mothers aluminum and metal polish on mine with a dremel. It takes off all the rust spots. If you do it slowly and take your time you can get it looking very good. First time I did mine it looked more like a matte gray, now it is actually shiny.
I carry mine daily. Lately the temperature has been around 95 degrees. So yes, it has come in contact with quite a bit of sweat. I wipe mine down atleast once a week with the metal polish and buff by hand. Between doing that and taking off the Hogue slip on, I think I have stopped mine. But I am still looking into getting mine coated in something. I wish you could send guns to Glock and get them finished the same as theirs. Terry ETA: Just remembered this. A long time ago I had a Para Ordnance P14-45 SS. (not a cheap gun) I had a problem with surface rust on it when I carried it daily. I used some stuff called JB Bore Compound from Brownells on advise from a friend that owns a gun shop and shoots extensively. Again with a dremel and very soft polishing wheel. I just used it once on that gun and never had the problem again. Kept the gun for about a year after that. As far as I know the then current sherrif carried it every day on duty and never had a problem. Might be worth a shot. I think my buddy still carries it in his shop. If so I will get some tomorrow and see how it works. |
