Hey all. Im considering a XD .40 4" purchase, Ive narrowed it down to the XD and the Glock 22. I was just wondering what yalls experiences with controls and ergonomics of this gun. I have fairly small hands, being only 5' 5" tall. I basically like the Glock, except for the lack of a safety, (the handgun I trained on was a S&W Tactical in .40) the small mag release, and the awful sloppy and somewhat stiff trigger. This would be a range gun, at least until I move out of CA and get a carry permit for it.

Anyways, any in depth reviews yall can point me to, or comments or observations would be greatly appreciated.

I have three XD-40's.  One is the 4" model, the other are Tacticals.  All of them have excellent ergonomics.  The controls are all in the right spot, and I love the ambi mag release because I can press it with my trigger finger instead of having to wiggle my thumb over to it.

The trigger reset is rather long on the XD, but that isn't anything that the average shooter worries about... mostly the gaming guys are the ones who complain about that.

Two of my guns had a sharp edge on the trigger that made it irritating to shoot.  I had to remove the trigger and put a bevel on the edges.   The only changes I have made to my two Tacticals was to replace the front sight with the Hi-Viz fiber optic.

Accuracy and reliability are good, on par with the Glocks I've owned.

The Glocks in .40 are pretty uncomfortable to shoot.   Something about their grip design seems to magnify the snappy recoil of the .40.  I can't find many fans of the Glocks in .40, though their 9mm models are much more popular.  I had a G23 for a few years and I finally realized I wasn't going to be able to deal with the way it beat up my hand.  I swapped it for an older G19 and have been much happier.  Also, the .40 Glocks seem to experience a disproportionate rate of catastrophic failures.

If you buy the XD40, it has a fully supported chamber, if you buy a Glock .40, you might want to replace the barrel with one that has a fully supported chamber. Barsto Precision makes fully supported barrels for the Glock. Some say that the partially supported chamber of the Glock is fine, and it is for the most, just don't reload, use only factory ammo.

Thanks guys. Yeah, I dont plan to shoot anything but factory personally. The more I read about this gun, the more I like it. I think I'm gonna pick myself up one of these in a few more paychecks.

I have the XD in tatical, and the glock... so I can tell you from side-by-side shooting experience that the XD wins in every catagory in my book... just seems to be a much more natural extention of your hand. Get the XD, and you wont be disappointed.
