| At first, I wanted a .40. Then I read that a 9mm is just as efficient with less recoil. Both have flat trajectories. That's important because I want to target shoot, but it will also serve as home defense. Is the 10mm better than the .45, and how are the trajectories? |

If you want a .40 the XDM was designed as a .40 the XD40 was designed on a 9mm frame. The 9mm will be most cost effective to shoot. They don't make a 10mm so the .45 is the choice for a big (expensive) bullet. |
| I've had an XD .40 for a while and love it. I just bought an XD .40 Tactical as my go-to gun for home defense, target shooting, and backpacking. So, FWIW, there's my vote. I think it's clear that the relatively-hot 500-ft-lb .40 loads are more effective than the better 9mm loads, but I think many believe the 9mm is effectively just as good. I respectfully disagree. |

Thanks for all the input. That was a lot of good advice.
I currently have a Taurus PT 92, 9mm. And I have tested the XD 40 Tactical at the range with 200 rounds and loved it. This will be the only handgun I will own(for now), and I want it multi-purpose(home defense and target). I don't think I want a .45 for cost. Isn't it also too fatiguing to shoot 100 rounds of .45? The main attraction to the 9mm would be cost. I thought the .40 recoil was acceptable. Honestly, I don't mind being limited to a 10 rnd mag. It makes my shooting session a little longer and more enjoyable. |

If you are enjoying .40, then you will be fine with .45 as far as recoil goes.
I run 9mm almost exclusively, but if I were stuck with 10 rounds, I would be all .45. I don't think that ammo cost should be that big a deal unless you are shooting a bunch. As a 9mm junkie I also hate to have to admit that the GPR (grins per round) is much higher with a .45. |
| I took everyone's advice and tried out a couple of .45s (Glock 21and XD Tactical). Both were great. I thought I would hate the Glock because of the high sight line and the blocky grip. I still don't like the grip, but it shot great. Maybe I get the .40 Tactical and the .45 Glock 21. |

Could you even get a 10rnd mag for the XDm? NO, and I do not think that the XDm has made it into the Kalifornia approved list mainly because of this. However there are low cap 10rd mags for the XD 9 and 40, so you can look that route, if you want, get a 40, then get a 9mm conversion barrel and a 9mm mag.... both guns in one package... just remember you can go down from a 40 to a 9 or 357 but you can NOT take a 9 to either 357 or 40. However I also agree..... 45. Out of all 6 of my XDs, the 45 compact is the one I carry daily and the 45 tact is on my hip camping.... along with a good sized fixed blade and usually the 590 over my shoulder or in tent/ SUV. |
| I do not have a conversion but a coworker does, he purposely bought the 40 just for the conversion barrel. I have been out with him shooting it and I have never seen it have a issue, and even on one occasion he forgot the 9mm mag and used the 40 with the 9mm ammo. It did not have a hiccup, but he said that it has caused occasional problems in the past when using a unmodifed 40 mag when forgetting the 9mm mag. I was half tempted to do this, but instead just bought a 9mm of both of my 40 XDs.... can never have enough right. Was looking at getting a 9mm barrel for my 96, but everyone says you need the kit (slide and all for the berettas) |

I had the same dilemma recently and picked up the XD9 tactical and love it. I've got or have had pistols in most other popular calibers and feel the 9mm in the XD is a good fit. The ammo cost is a big savings and 18 round Mecgar mags give plenty of fire power using +P defence ammo. I shoot this pistol very well and is currently my bedside piece. I almost went with the .40 and a 9mm conversionn barrell but didn't want to deal with any possible reliability issues with extraction. I think you need a good .40 and .45acp in the collection but a good 9mm fullsize handgun is a must too. The XD's are a great value, fit my hand better than the Glock, and have AK like reliability.
This is my first post. Thanks to all the members for the great info on AR15.com. |
| I have 4" XD45 and 9mm plus HS2000 (9mm). The only problem with 45XD is it will not shoot lead bullets and it will hang up on every shot. 9mm will shoot everything you feed to it. I never liked 40 cal. in polymer gun. In my Glock model 32 in 357sig I have 40 cal barrel installed and prefer shooting 357 sig rather than .40. XD is more ergonomic than Glock for me so maybe it would be easier to control 40 in it. Today I shot HS2000 with laser installed on the trigger guard and I could hit the center of the target each time. I could see the bullet hole at the point where laser dot touched the paper just after impact. |
| I have an XD Tactical .45. I'm a big boy and can handle 2 double taps @ 25m maintaining center mass, which is probably more than most guys I shoot with. It eats the ammo, and keeps it on target however, if you are of a small build you may want to go with the .40, if you cannot handle the .45? I think the Tactical .45 is your best bet for home defense and target shooting, because the .45 is a very accurate round and it's a proven manstopper. Also since you cannot use high capacity magazines in California, you will be fine with 10rd mags in .45. Chances of taking a home invader down with 10 rds of .45 is very high, whereas the 9mm you will need to place bullets in critical zones to expect quick results. On that note, it is critical to hit vital zones with the .45, the FBI has studies showing this. I would recommend keeping your PT-92 also, if possible, you will not have the ability to empty an entire magazine into the target without hesitation with the .45 unless your highly skilled. I have a custom PT-92 barsto, it's a great handgun with 17rds of 9mm it's unbeatable. The XD Tactical is a combat weapon IMO, the 92's are also, but without significant rehearsal the 92 can get people killed, this is why SOCOM has not used them mainstream for a long time. I can build a 92 that is reliable, and tactically accurate. While the Taurus barrels are good, they are not tactically accurate at all. The Beretta barrels are better, but if not fitted properly are not what I consider to be tactically accurate. The XD Tactical is OEM tactically accurate, no relation to the name, the barrels on XDs are just good. (I define tactically accurate as having the ability to place one round in CNP (Face) @ 25 feet). CNP engagement is crucial for any tactical operator, in the event of hostage or suicide bomb incidents. I hope this helps out. |
