| My G30 while a good gun has been very unreliable with semiwadcutters. Interested in the XD45 compact but was wondering just how reliable the gun is. Can you owners give it a regular diet of SWC's HP's, flatpoints, lead bullets without it choking? |

I run a lot of reloads through my guns and bullet availability not being what it should has caused me to try different bullets that seat at various heights. The rule I have found is that every gun seems to love Winchester ball height. At least my guns do with one exception, Para. But that's another thread.
Winchesters overall length of bullet feeds best through my XD, and your Glock. I was reloading flat nose bullets that seat at a lower height than ball and experienced some failure to feed in my XD45 compact. SWCs seat lower than ball. I can run them in my Colts because I can use lighter recoil springs on the Colts. You can't change recoil springs on the compact 45. The heavier springs cause the bullets up into the hood too quick and the casing is caught at the barrel throat, thus sticking the casing rim at your guns breach and there you have it. Three Point Bind. I can run the flat nose bullets but have to seat them high and I worry about velocity as there is not much bullet left in casing. Springer Precision sells lighter recoil springs for the 5 inch tactical Xds. But then you can't quite carry those as comfortably as you can your Glock 36. I've shot the 36 and there is not as much felt recoil as you find in the compact 45. (if we are going to trade apple for apple here.) Those tinfoil plastic wrapped magazines that won't drop free for long when kept loaded are actually made that way for a reason, they absorb felt recoil significantly. The plus trade that you make for the XD is the loaded round indicater, back strap safety, and a more ergonomical grip design. The XD barrels are rifled which make them more accurate than Glock's hexogonal barrel, but the plus for Glock's barrel is a longer barrel life as that barrel doesn't have as much rifling friction for the bullet so your bullet velocities will run higher with your Glock. So what am I trying to say ?? The XD format is a safer (see cop shoots himself-youtube) and more accurate shooting platform than the Glock. The XDs are going to pound you harder than the Glocks. As we all know there are trade offs with anything. If you want to run SWC's I would run them in a longer barreled gun that you can change to a lighter recoil system. As for your question, is the XD45 compact reliable ?? Xtremely.... Will it feed some SWC's and some FP's without chocking ? NO Will it feed HP's ? It chews the hell out of Federal and Corbon.. that's all the hp's I've fed it. Most imporatantly have fun.... |
| have a 4" XD45. put over 1k rounds in it and never ever a single failure or hiccup. it eats absolutely everything... +P, light bullets, heavy bullets, fmj, any HP i put in it.... and for a .45, it has a very slim grip. it has been flawless and i love the friggin thing. i'm a glock guy and i love them as well but I'd put my XD45 head to head with my G21; just as accurate and reliable thus far. G21 has a tad less recoil but it's a bit bigger / longer. |
