I currently own an XD45C and I'm wondering if I bought a 5" barrel would it work in my Xd with the barrel hanging out of the end of the slide? Also I', looking at purchasing an XD9 tactical. Can I convert from 9mm to 40 or .357sig? or is it the other way around? Thanks for your help and photos are welcome.

Why would you want the barrel to hang out of the end?

It is the other way around, you can use the 5" barrel in the 4" guns if you want. The 45C comes in a 4" and 5" version.

I had already purchased the XD45C with a 4" barrel and I'm considering attempting to get a little more accuracy out of it for target shooting. So on the 9mm XD is the hole that the barrel sits in smaller on the 9mm than on the 40 or sig?

Yes, the 9mm has a smaller diameter barrel than the .40. Putting a longer barrle in your 4" won't help your accuracy.
