I've been seriously considering a XD45c, since I like the idea of a 4" barrel on the shorter frame.

I already have a XD9 Subcompact, so Ideally I'd really like an XD9 Compact, however, They don't make one.

So, the question is: Can you use a XD9 4" Slide on a Subcompact frame?

If that's possible, and I'm guessing it's not, I could just pick up a 4" XD9.

(This was prompted by a thread I read on another board from a guy who bought the 5" XD45C so that he could use the 5" slide on his (formerly)4" XD, and the 4" Slide on his XD45C.  I'm guessing that the SC frame is too different, however, for that to work.)

I'm pretty sure the frame is too short for other slides to be properly secured to the sub-compact frame.

But You could just buy a 4" barrel and let it stick out the end of the compact's slide.  It may look goofy but it would be the cheapest solution.

Oh, one other thing to remember, half of the advantage of a longer barrel is a longer sight radius.  If you simply swap barrels, you'll have to live with a 3" sight radius.

by the way, the post you mentioned about swaping the 4" and 5" slides, well that's possible because the frame doesn't change length between a 4" and 5" xd.

Thanks, that's what I thought.

No, I want the whole schebang, I just really would kinda like it in 9mm, so that I can share mags.  But I'll live, I'm a 45ACP guy at heart, anyway.

Kinda what I figured.

Correct me if im wrong but, I thought a 3in is a sub-compact, and the 4in is the compact, if thats the case i know for sure the they make a xd9 compact.

The XD's come in many sizes.

There are 2 frame sizes, Short and Tall.  In the 45's, both frames are ~1/4" 'taller' than the 9/40 models.

There are 3 barrel sizes, 3", 4", and 5".

There are basically 4 'models':

The XD Subcompact (XD SC) is a Short Frame, 3" bbl model.  It is available in 9mm and 40 S&W.

The XD Compact (XD C) is a Short Frame, 4 or 5" bbl model, and is only available in 45ACP.

The XD Service Model is a Tall Frame, 4" bbl model.  In all calibers.

The XD Tactical Model is a Tall Frame, 5" bbl model.  In all calibers.

One can use the a sleeve that SA sells to use Tall magazines in short frames, and basically get the taller frame size and greater mag capacity.  I use them in my XD9SC, and they work well.  The XD45C, at least, comes with a 'short' and a 'tall' magazine from the factory.  With the 'Tall' magazine in, it's basically a Service model, but you can make it MUCH more concealable by just using the short magazine.

I don't find that the 3" bbl helps my concealment of my XD9SC at all, so I'd like a 4" model to get more velocity & Site radius.  Plus, the dang thing wouldn't look so goofy with the tall Magazine in.

I would have bought an XD45C at the gun show this weekend had I found one.  But I didn't.    I prefer 45 anyway, so I'm OK with it, but I didn't really want to purchase more magazines, or have to deal with looking at the base plate to figure out what caliber the magazine is in (when empty, it's pretty obvious when full).  Which is made more complicated by the fact that most of my Mags are labeled at .40 mags.

You could always buy a service model XD9 and cut the grip down to use sub compact magazines..
I've seen it done to Glock 17's to accept Glock 19 magazines

I've contemplated it.  Springer Precision, IIRC, has a conversion.

But I'd really like a 'factory' setup.

I think I'm just going to suck it up and get the 45.  I'm not really wedded to 9mm, it's just that I'd like to be able to use the same mags.

You won't be dissapointed with a 4" XD compact in 45.  It's what I carry and I wouldn't trade it for anything.  Well... almost anything.

I hope so.

Because I bought one last night, 4" Compact, Stainless Slide.

Won't get a chance to shoot it for a couple days, I have baseball tickets tonight.

I had to do a bit of modifying to my IWB holster to get it to work, it 'wrapped' just a little around the bottom of my Subcompact, and that obviously won't work with the longer slide.  A little work with a file and my bench grinder and it fits the compact now as well.  (Kydex holster)

My Insight XML light doesn't fit it as well, either.  It rattles a bit.  I think my SC has a slightly 'big' rail, because it's loose on my Sig, as well.  I may have stretched it out with my SC's rail.

All in all, though, I'm a pretty happy camper.
