So after shooting a number of handguns (glock 22, SA 1911, XD9 5" ported, etc) i loved the way the XD felt in my hands and decided to make it my first handgun! I went with the 4" ported model and just picked it up this morning. Going to the range in a few minutes

Is there anything i need to know about using and/or maintaining the XD? I typically clean/lube my guns after each range session. I'm using 115gr UMC.

You answered your own question! I use CLP. I would keep the portings nice and clean too. I don't have portings on either of my XDs.

Your going to love it! I just shot my new Xd for the first time last week. The speed loader takes a little getting used to. The mags are a little stiff at first. As for the gun, she's great! very smooth, nice groups, you can feel the quality. That ported model lets off a nice little fire show.

Thanks, thats kind of what i figured just wanted to double check.

I did have a few problems today at the range: 8 FTE, 6 of them on the 2nd from last round,  and once the mag was empty the slide did not catch to stay open about 7/10 times.

Is this normal for a brand new gun? Does it just need to be broken in more? My friend's SA 1911 had a constant FTE problem for the first 4-500rds.

No, that is not normal, nor, is it the norm with any gun for that matter. Maybe your hitting the slide catch? When I let my cousin shoot my tac XD45, he was hitting the slide catch which was causing some hiccups. It could also be a bad magazine.

I LOVE my XD45 compact.

I'd keep mine over every single handgun in my arsenal.  AWESOME piece of machinery.

Enjoy!

congrats, an xd was my first handgun as well, now i own two they are accurate, reliable, and backed by a great customer service. you will be very pleased with it, my dad has the exact model and i am trying to pry it from him they are sweet shooters and that ported makes shooting too easy. i have 2 .40 models and love them though and i am always looking to add more xd's to the collection.

Send me your address.  I'll GIVE you a set (I have three).

I'm left-handed and these kits are totally worthless to me . . .

I'm taking it out again in the morning to try to trouble-shoot this, i'll surely let you guys know. It's a definite possibility that I was hitting the slide catch, i'll have to adjust my grip if so.

BINGO, just moving my left thumb on top of my right solved it. I did however have 1 FTE out of 90rds. Maybe these mags just need broken in. But all in all, great gun very accurate; so far i love it!

i just shot 100 rounds out of my brand new sig 226 9mm and i had one failure to feed and my slide wouldnt lock back for the first 20 or so rounds... but after that it would lock back perfect.... i called sig and he said since its a new gun the springs real tight. and its not broke in yet.. and he told me to leave the gun cocked back over night to loosen the spring. but like i said i have had not one jam or hiccup in my xd9 yet "knocks on wood"

Welcome to the cult club.

Give it a good cleaning and then just go shoot it. My routine with all my XD's has been to clean them about every third trip to the range or so. I do run a bore snake through it and wipe all the residue off every trip. When the rails start looking bone dry I give it a good cleaning.

ETA: UMC ammo is pretty crappy ammo. I've had problems with it in several guns. Penetrated primers and duds seem be part of using this ammo in my experience. YMMV

One thing you will want to do is NUMBER YOUR MAGS. This way you can tell which one malfunctions, and won't have to guess..."Was that the mag with the small dent and scratch on...?" If one mag consistently causes problems,  you know which one to send back!

Or you can name them, too... Alice, Betty, Cathy...

i thought a magazine can only cause a failure to feed problem and not a FTE

I will definitely number/label my mags.

I only use UMC because i can get it for a "good" price and haven't had any issues with the 223 in my AR. What would you recommend for plinking/practice?

I'll be at the range again tomorrow so we'll see if we get any hiccups this time.

Me too.  Never any problems with it.

Xds are sweet pistols.  I enjoy both of mine, an XD40 Service and an XD40 subcompact.

You know you can get a free left handed paddle holster from SA if you call them right? They do this since the kits only come with right handed holsters. You'll need to give them the serial number to each gun but they should send you 1 holster per gun. They did for my SC and Tactical 9mm.

IS OFFER STILL OPEN ON THE XD GEAR? I BOUGHT MINE WAY BEFORE THEY STARTED THE XD GEAR PROMOTION. IN FACT MY XD .40 WAS MADE BEFORE THEY STARTED MELONITE COATINGS. BUT IF YOU WISH TO GIVE A KIT AWAY, I COULD PUT ONE TO GOOD USE.  THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME.         BYRON

Congrats on the new XD!

I love mine.  The only FTEs I've had were from some aluminum-cased Blazer ammo.  I had two of them lock up so tightly in the chamber that I had to knock them out from the muzzle end with a rod and a mallet.  Sure can't blame that on the gun.

RatFart, you're probably better off IM'ing him about the XD gear.

Thanks guys! I've got a little over 200 rounds through it and have not had any FTE's since my last post, guess it just had to be broken in. My sister wants a pistol now too, hopefully she'll decide on an XD too

It's kind of hard to think of why a mag would cause a FTE, unless it had fed a bullet before the slide locked all the way back.

Did your FTE include a stovepipe, or did the casing just not come out of the chamber?

It was a stovepipe, my buddy's SA 1911 had the exact same problem. When we switched to a wilson mag from another guy's Kimber Pro carry it was fine. The more rounds we put through his 1911 the better it got but we never got rid of the problem completely. As I said though, my issues are gone now.

My first pistol was an XD40 Service Model. Just bought an XD45. I love them, you could probably never clean the thing and it still function every time. I would never put my gun through that but you probably could. Is there any sort of chemical people use to preserve the finish of the slide?
