I am weighing-in-the-balance the springfield xd and the steyr S-series guns.I prefer the .40 SW.

 all of the research I've done on the steyr guns so far have shown that they're built around the .40 SW (not the 9 mm!), and have supported chambers.

 any input?

Xd40's have a fully supported chamber.
